The dump site has been expanding since it was established in 1996. Surrounded by settlements, the dump site has no more space to expand except upwards. Throughout the day, dump trucks arrive and pile on the trash wherever they find space. Urban planner Frank Muramuzi says this is a serious problem.

Kampala's city authorities say the collapse of the Kitesi Dam site served as a wake-up call. They say they are putting mechanisms in place to turn organic waste into compost and launching awareness campaigns to educate the public on the importance of separating waste before disposing it. Without a nationwide effect to reduce, reuse and recycle, Uganda's waste problems could go from bad to worse.
