The reason people can't afford a house is in part because we have a crisis of not enough housing construction in the country. Why? Because there's too much red tape to be able to build a single family home.

When you have less supply, prices go up, and that's a big part of why people aren't able to afford housing, which I think is a major problem amongst Republicans and Democrats.
