And just through sheer sales, I had restaurant owners and bar owners and stuff like that paying me to develop a web page for a technology they'd never used and wouldn't understand for another three to five years.
but I was making hundreds of dollars.
And it doesn't sound like a lot, but to me with where I was in life, it was all the money in the world.
It would have been, I don't know exactly.
It would have been ones of thousands of dollars.
Mind you, how many things weren't going your way back then?
Number one, there was no reference point whatsoever if you wanted to start a business as to where to go and how to do it.
Remember, people didn't even have email yet, not in a meaningful way.
You couldn't Google anything.
It hadn't been invented yet.
And your best resources were maybe something in college or maybe a professor who maybe did something 20 years ago.
I mean, it was a tough start.
On top of that, you had no way to do customer acquisition.
I mean, I was driving door to door to businesses to ask them if they wanted to buy a webpage.
I didn't understand pricing either.
All I understood was $300 was $5 times as many hours as I did.
It's a lot of hours, yeah.
I did really well at the telemarketing job, which actually did wonders for helping me secure a job in Ohio.
So I ended up quitting D'Angelo's, working at the mainframe computer sales company, doing telemarketing, and then transferring to a company in Ohio, of all places.
I didn't even know where Ohio was.
