So I tried to get out to the road so I could hitchhike my way home. Now, keep in mind, this was like 2008. Not really a time when I think kids were hitchhiking frequently. I knew not to hitchhike in 2008. I was only two years younger than the guy. I was a scout at the time. I had been on camping trips that were very similar to the one he described. I get it.

I get why he was like, I don't want to be here anymore. What I don't get is trying to get out and hitchhike, but I don't think that was weird. I think that's just bad decision-making.

My guess is that they probably didn't... If I were to offer a mundane reason for that, it's probably that they didn't want people going out there because it's a dangerous place to be.
