And each of those authors has received at least six grand at this point for something they had written before.

In the case of Mindy's book, there are a group of sex workers that get paid every time you buy a copy of her book through a split where she's paying people who she just cites and credits as like people she learned from through buying it.

But there was, it got to where there was like more than $100,000 flowing through these things.

And I realized that there was no legal structure behind it.

We were just YOLOing it through the software that I'd made, that we had made.

And so began to research making some corporate structure for our collective.

looked at LLCs, S-Corps, the basic things that you're supposed to do.

I was confused by the process.

I did not feel encouraged or inspired.

And as I thought about trying to make something that reflected how we work together, it was clear I was going to have to hire a lawyer and it was just going to cost a lot of time and money.

And I had been working with a group of artists recently on some legal questions where they're trying to do some things and I was helping them connect with lawyers to design custom things for them.

And I just had this flash of thinking back to the PBC process and wondering, is there a case for creating a category

where all these things that my artist friends are going to lawyers to get these custom vehicles made, that can be like a cake in the box you could just buy.

And that for me, starting this writers' collective, I similarly could opt into that same structure, just check the things that were relevant to me, choose a dropdown to say, oh, we're democratic or we're a dictatorship or whatever, whatever your structure is.

But what if that was available?

Absolutely, I would use that.

That could be so much easier.

I shared the idea with a friend who's connected to lawyers.

And within a day, there were a group of lawyers that were researching some questions I had.

And one of those people is a superstar named Susan McCormick.
