100NO 619: Longevity, Beliefs & The 4 Minute Mile

09 Feb 2025

Description

When Roger Bannister ran a sub 4-minute mile for the first time in 1954, he did what no one on planet earth had ever done before. No one believed it was possible. And interestingly, as soon as he achieved it, running a sub 4-minute mile became suddenly achievable. His record lasted just 46 days. Today, the world record is 3 minutes 43 seconds. So, when Damo almost cracked the 4-minute mile equivalent in his golf game recently, it spurred this conversation around our longevity beliefs. Not many of us have sub 4-minute mile parents or mentors that show us that mastering the ageing process is possible. Not many of us believe that we can do ageing well. But perhaps more importantly than ever, whilst longevity is now extremely common in most developed nations, very few of society believe that they can “run it under 4 minutes”, aka do it exceptionally well.
