莽莽万重山，孤城山谷间。无风云出塞，不夜月临关。属国归何晚？楼兰斩未还。烟尘一长望，衰飒正摧颜。唐肃宗乾元二年（759）秋天，杜甫抛弃华州司功参军的职务，开始了“因人作远游”的艰苦历程。他从长安出发，首先到了秦州（治今甘肃天水）。在秦州期间，他先后用五律形式写了二十首歌咏当地山川风物，抒写伤时感乱之情和个人身世遭遇之悲的诗篇，统题为《秦州杂诗》。本篇是第七首。
