常苦沙崩损药栏，也从江槛落风湍。新松恨不高千尺，恶竹应须斩万竿！生理只凭黄阁老，衰颜欲付紫金丹。三年奔走空皮骨，信有人间行路难。因徐知道据成都叛乱，杜甫曾一度离开成都草堂，避难于梓州（治今四川三台）、阆州（治今四川阆中）等地。广德二年（764）正月，杜甫携家由梓州赴阆州，准备出陕谋生。二月，闻严武再为成都尹兼剑南节度使，同时，严武也来信相邀，诗人于是决定重返成都。于阆州还成都途中作诗五首，此为其中第四首。诗题中的“严郑公”，即严武，广德元年严武被封为郑国公。
