What is the AI hype cycle and how does it compare to the dot‑com boom?
Coming up on AI haven't a clue. Media specialists and all-round AI expert, Simon Andrews. That was wow, because how on earth do you not see something like that?
Coming. As we revisit one of our favourite interviews.
AI looks promising, but has it changed very much? You know, we're starting to see s things changing. The ability to play around with the stuff, there's loads of interesting products that come out of it. I just don't buy that. I'm with you. You would be very foolish to sort of ignore the new horse for the old horse.
Hello and welcome to AI Hamlet Clue brought to you with KPNG, the podcast where we explore the wild world of AI uh with myself, Technomist George Butler.
Hello and uh AI enthusiast uh James Chandler reporting for duty.
Very good. We um I don't know if you I I know you're getting on a bit, so I don't know how good your memory is.
That's
um Pui uh when we started this podcast had some really interesting guests on. And one of my all time favourites was somebody that you actually used to you used to work with, you certainly used to know.
Yeah, we work with the same company, a big media agency, a guy called Simon Andrews. And he's always been uh he's since he left that business and has been involved in a bunch of others. But he's always been, I think, one of those thinkers who could just really, you know, sort of look into a crystal ball and see where things are going. He talks loads about things like retail media, he talks about the rise of creators, he talks about how TV has changed. And unsurprisingly, he talks a lot about uh about AI. He does a brilliant uh newsletter called Fix, which comes out every single Friday, and it's uh it's the highlight of my week. A
lot, isn't
it? Very sad. Yeah, he's great. And he's uh I think he's just one of those voices on AI who can um sort of glimpse you into the future. But he's also very grounded. He's not sort of like me getting very carried away about things. He's pretty grounded.
Yeah, that's I think the thing that caught me the most. And the thing the thing that uh he was one of our first guests who kind of came in with a tech background, a tech pedigree, but wasn't jumping From the ceiling about how amazing this new technology was. He was quite grounded and went, Well, yeah, it's gonna have a good impact. Don't necessarily think it's going to change the world. And and here's the thing: we we we had some amazing guests on um in the first few months of of doing this show. And we've kind of been very lucky to have a lot of listeners kind of join us along this journey. Um, and quite a few of them wouldn't have heard. Heard from some of our favorite guests. So uh I know we had the brilliant uh Jordan um uh come back onto the show last week, so we thought uh
Back onto the Why not revisit possibly maybe my one if not my favorite, one of my favourite guests in in Simon? So um should we get Simon back on the show, James?
There's duh. Simon Andrews. He's been around. I mean, he's seen all the big things in technology. So uh he's uh he's a commentator, he's a kind of analyst, he's worked in um big agencies, uh, he's kind of a consultant now, and he's looking at all new sorts of technology. So he's looking at things like how supermarkets are becoming the next big publishers. He's uh he's looking at the growth of social media, he's looking at wearables. One thing that Is dominating his thoughts and he creates this incredible newsletter every Friday is AI. And that section of the newsletter is getting chunkier and chunkier and chunkier. And it's a big inspiration for some of the stuff that we talk about here. So it was wonderful to get him on.
The newsletter is called Fix, and it's really his perspective on what's going on in the whole world. And it's one of the best newsletters I think that cuts through all the hype and gets some. some uh some serious commentary on the things that are happening.
Simon, thank you so much for joining us here on on AI Havin' a Clue. Um My pleasure. I I wanna kick things off because over the last sort of few decades we've seen so much media transformation.
