Alex Aiono: Let's Get Into It
Binge Eating: Food + Family with Bubba Aiono + Mauterangimarie Clark
17 Nov 2020
Food and family go hand-in-hand, and often have deep ties to our culture and heritage. Food is love in many families, but complicated patterns come to light when guilt, shame, and pressure to eat enter into the mix. Alex Aiono is joined by his cousin, actor Bubba Aiono, as well as University of Otago researcher Mauterangimarie Clark to explore the relationship of food to culture, and why our access to food (or lack thereof) can have a ripple effect on how (and why) we eat what we do.Bubba and Alex share about their struggles with binge eating disorder and crash diets. They dig deep into the ways in which generational trauma around food is passed down; when one generation doesn't know where their next meal is coming from, a scarcity mindset can be passed down - even when poverty has turned to privilege. Expert Mauterangimarie Clark uncovers why we make the choices we do around food, and how we can change the conversation and break unhealthy patterns.Executive Producers Jack O'Brien + Miles GrayProduced by Catherine Law + Joelle SmithEdited + Engineered by Catherine Law Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
