Dear Alice. For various reasons I've been thinking lately about alternate lives. We all have them. Crowding our brains, whether we're happy with our circumstances or not. And to be clear, I am very happy with my circumstances. This is not a message about regret. But about wonder. As in I wonder how it all could have gone differently. We met so early that the lines of divergence mostly include you. What if we had followed that wild whim? Moved to Paris like we joked about. Been swept up in the romance of the idea. And then pushed through all the heavy logistics involved. Vieces and apartments and learning French. Which would be hard for both of us, even though you did take some French in high school. Oh, I vaguely remember you'd say a lot.
Yeah, I knew that. You'd say about words you did not know. But we would have managed. And now we would be What? Twenty years into our French lives? Long enough to have local friends, longtime neighbors.

To think of ourselves as expats, that word we use to avoid the idea that any American could ever have to be an immigrant to anywhere else.
Or that time I got a job offer in Austin. This was long before it had become the center of the manosphere. had grown unrecognizable to its older inhabitants, who had sworn to keep it weird, Back when it was weird in a fun way. And not weird in the off-putting way the tech bros are weird. TechBros, of course, is short for the common phrase technology brothers. I'm getting off track. I got that job offer in Austin. And you had just started work in Burbank. And it would have set your career back badly to have to change again. We were only a year out of college. And so we had to decide. Is the right thing to do to break up for the sake of each of our individual lives? It would be the mature thing to do, we said to each other.
Adults do this all the time. Make hard decisions that have nothing to do with romance. And we need to be able to make those hard decisions too. We said to each other. If it is meant to be, we'll meet again, one bright day, we said to each other.
