Am I doing it wrong? For Doctors by Doctors.
4: Hard conversations - why you don't tell someone they have food in their teeth
02 Nov 2023
What stops you from telling someone they have food in their teeth? Buckle up, team. You're about to hear one of Becc's most embarrassing stories. This will absolutely put you in the mood to get better at saying the hard thing to yoru fellow humans - doctors, patients, loved ones and strangers. Communication is an incredibly important part of our work as doctors. This episode is beyond the basics though. Here, we talk about the minefield of navigating difficult conversations on topics that make both others and yourself uncomfortable. Because we know that, just because you're a doctor, it doesn't mean you deliver bad news, hard feedback or misunderstandings without vulnerability. Communication is not a simple thing. The truth is we can never really see or understand the inner workings of another. In common day situations, this doesn't cause much trouble. Your communication as a doctor, however, can inflict or subtract suffering to and from your patients. Your lack of communication due to your discomfort can change the decisions of patients for worse. We know it's in your integrity to communicate all of the material information you have to a patient. And to question and confirm their understanding along this tortuous and often surprising path. Let's navigate this together so that you feel confident and convicted to show up as your best. Kick back with your cuppa as we kick off with Becc's embarrassment and, don't worry, there's more from where this came from in future episodes. Chat with us down below!
