I can't even say I'm surprised. Of course, it's a given that you're going to have me on to talk Harry Potter because who else are you going to invite here? I think you've tried, right? Tried to get other people on.
Well... You're the only person I wanted to talk to about Harry Potter, you know. You've listened to all four, I presume. Thoughts right now?
Oh, it is the best. 10 out of 10. We could stop the episode right here, honestly, because I think that this is the best version of. Harry Potter to be out and I started reading Harry Potter as a full-grown adult so I've gone through the audiobooks I've um watched the movies or tried to at least try to sit through the movies you didn't like the movies I did not enjoy the movies at all and why not what was your beef with the movies Because you said unabridged earlier, I will go back to that. I just feel like it is a very limited experience of Harry Potter. Of course, the visual effects are incredible.
How do the performances compare to the movie adaptations?
Of course, if you want to feel the universe, then that is available to you in the visual mediums, which is the movies. But nothing comes close to this, this Harry Potter full cast edition.
It's so much fun and I think it's important to mention that you can tell that there is so much heart and work that's been put into it. It's not just a soulless big budget thing. You can tell that the people care. I am amazed at the sound design especially. It must have taken absolutely hours. The performances are mostly really good. Almost fantastic, I would say. And that's partly because there are some big names in here. And even the names that you don't recognize give you really awesome, super fun performances that lean into the whimsy of Harry Potter. This is not an edition that takes itself super seriously. I think they have a really good interpretation of the text and the tone. And that all blends into the way the sound design is put together and combined with the performances is awesome.
And we're talking big names too, like Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore.
What are the challenges of separating the audiobooks from the films?
Hugh Laurie is the guy who played House in House MD amongst other roles. He is an interesting interpretation of the character of Abbas Dumbledore. Very different from the movies. And I'm going to admit to you, Rania, it's been really hard for me to compartmentalize the movies from this full cast audiobook edition. I'm always comparing it to the movies. But it feels like a movie, doesn't it?
It feels like the best version of the movies. Yes. Now, so Elvis Dumbledore is one specific character that you find hard to remove from the movies and redo as a performance at the full cast?
