24 Aug 2020

Description

Video version of this talk available at https://youtu.be/pOU8RfC7bUM This audio-visual lecture by Dr. Ramzi Salti was recorded by Zoom on Thursday, August 13, 2020 and was presented in conjunction with Sijal Institute in Amman, Jordan. Title: Tribute to Lebanese Music from Fairuz to Mashrou Leila Description: Lebanese indie/alternative musicians have long attempted to broach themes of social justice, corruption, and freedom in their work--a prophetic fact that may have much to inform recent events in Lebanon where the capital has been rocked by one of the most violent tragedies in recent memory. It is thus the aim of this talk to examine the way in which that indie Lebanese music may not only assist in healing and rebuilding the country, but also in reminding the world of Beirut's status as a hub of cultural activity with a rich, diverse music scene.
