121 - Interviewing 101: Techniques To Help You Bag Your Next Executive Role

04 Mar 2019

Description

It’s always a good idea to go to an interview fully prepared. While some people have great interview skills, others may need to practise prior to meeting their potential employer to avoid common mistakes. Having said that, regardless of where you sit on the interviewee spectrum, you could be making mistakes you weren’t even aware of. So I’ve come up with good interview techniques for candidates to help you bag your next executive role. This is the second in the series with Brett Jarman (the founder and CEO of Experts On Air, the producers of the podcast). Topics covered: Advice offered in my book, ‘Uncover The Hidden Job Market’ Show your interest - print out company information or a LinkedIn profile and take it with you Don’t assume you know what the employer wants - ask what is expected of you in the role Don’t list off attributes you think are relevant - ask what your role will be and tell stories based on the employer’s answers Practising your stories ahead of time with family and friends or in the mirror and write them down Follow the STAR framework when telling your stories - Situation, Task, Actions, Results Flip the interview round to ask the interviewer questions about why they are in the company and what keeps them there Find out why the company is the right fit for you Why senior executives tend to let themselves down in interviews - low confidence Prepare for your nerves Don’t be too confident or cocky - make sure you ask the right questions that show you’re there to serve the employer Common mistakes people make - asking about money too soon and asking inane questions Arete Website: http://areteexecutive.com.au/ Richard Triggs LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richardtriggs/ Tap Into the Hidden Executive Job Market: http://areteexecutive.com.au/free-book/
