97. The Joys of Plein Air with Farley Lewis

This week’s episode features one of the artists who helped me get my start in the art world, Farley Lewis. Farley is a calligrapher and landscape artist based here in Missouri and we center most of our conversation around the joys of plein air competitions. He mentioned about halfway through the interview that these outdoor competitions are one of the major ways he sells his art, so I had to dive in on him with the questions. By the way, did you know that “plein air” is French for “outdoors?” Now you do! It makes sense, right? Farley mentioned that he meets collectors at these plein air events, he talks about how getting the experience has made him a better painter, he gets to mingle with other artists, and so many other positive aspects. I hope that if you’re someone who is thinking about trying one of these out or if you had no idea this existed, then I hope this inspires and educates you on the subject enough to seek out some more information on events in your area. As Farley mentions, the first event can be a little intimidating but like everything it gets easier and can be really beneficial!
