Implicit Bias with Dr. Quinn Capers

02 Jun 2020

Description

Quinn Capers IV, MD is an Interventional Cardiologist, Professor of Medicine, and the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Capers has also led workshops that have collectively trained over 1,000 physicians and healthcare providers in strategies to reduce implicit bias. His recent study on implicit bias is the first to document the presence and extent of unconscious racial bias in medical school admissions. Dr. Capers was a keynote speaker at the AAP's 2020 Annual Meeting. Allison Schroeder, MD, caught up with Dr. Capers (@DrQuinnCapers4) after his presentation to learn more about the definition of implicit (unconscious) bias and how it can influence our behavior. Implicit biases affect not only how we treat our patients, but also how we select applicants for admissions into medical schools and residency. He offers research-proven advice on how we can overcome our implicit biases.
