Banking On Girls

5: How an entrepreneur’s journey from Boston to Nigeria inspired Mira Mehta’s solution to global poverty

17 Nov 2022

Description

RMira Mehta is co-founder and CEO of Tomato Jos – a fully integrated farming and processing agribusiness in Northern Nigeria that produces tomato paste and other agricultural products for the domestic market. Before founding Tomato Jos, Mira worked in the financial services and healthcare sectors in New York and Nigeria, respectively, where she gained valuable technical skills, developed an empathetic worldview, and built a strong network that would empower her to launch a business at the base of the pyramid. She is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Business School and has lived in Nigeria since 2008. In this episode, Tomato Jos CEO, Mira Mehta, talks about the unique challenges of founding and growing her agribusiness in Nigeria. She discusses the key influences in her personal and business life and how early experiences and responsibilities formed the foundation of her financial literacy. From a young age Mira has been focused on saving and avoiding debt- these are behaviors she has carried through to adulthood and into her business. Finally, Mira challenges parents to encourage their girls to explore all fields, especially those that are not “traditionally feminine”  and in particular to enjoy and be good at math.
