Baseball Isn’t Boring

BIB on the Go: We're Ranking The MLB Managerial Openings

16 Oct 2025

Transcription

Chapter 1: What managerial openings are being ranked in this episode?

0.217 - 10.15 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, there should be some passion. This doesn't have to be boring. Okay, one thing the game needs is more people like you. You. You. You. You.

0

12.072 - 34.763 Unknown

You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You. You.

0

34.743 - 37.028

There you go.

0

37.048 - 38.591 Evan Bradshaw

This is the type of stuff you live for.

0

38.732 - 62.153 Unknown

I mean, it's really like when you were going to the great institution of Monmouth University, you say, you know, my goal is to do managerial opening power rankings. I don't think we've ever done in the... in the vast history of baseballs and boring podcasts, I don't think we've ever done managerial power ranking.

62.955 - 71.431 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, no, no. I mean, I don't, I don't. And the other thing too, is I don't know if there's ever been this many. Cause it's like, it's not, it's not really common.

73.015 - 74.217 Unknown

It's hard to power rank three.

74.197 - 84.309 Evan Bradshaw

That's what I'm saying. When you have an offseason where there's two, it's like, all right, well, I take this one over this one. All right, end of the show. So there was nine.

Chapter 2: How do gut instincts influence managerial rankings?

84.889 - 101.749 Evan Bradshaw

There was nine, yep. Humacher got Texas. And technically there was 10, but Don Kelly ended up getting the permanent job at Pittsburgh. Oh, okay. He kind of wiped that one out. But if you really went by how many opened, yeah. Next year, there'll be 10 guys that are going into their first full year as the manager of this team.

0

101.769 - 115.284 Unknown

I'm trying to think of... how it could have been more. And I try to think of like who held onto their job, which might've been in question. The one that jumps to mind is Rob Thompson, which, you know, like, I don't think he should be fired. I get psyched.

0

115.304 - 125.816 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah. He's much like him and him and Boone are kind of in the same boat where it's like, it's, they're kind of like the Tom Thibodeau boat where it's like, they're, they're the Tom Thibodeau boat.

0

126.197 - 129.801 Unknown

If you could, I'm just writing things down for you to Photoshop.

0

129.821 - 129.921

Yeah.

130.357 - 135.983 Unknown

You did the Pope wearing a baseballs and boring shirt. Now I want you to do the Tom Thibodeau boat.

136.584 - 157.447 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, well, it's like every fan base. It's like they're so successful for so long that they're miserable being successful. Like as a Met fan, I'm like, dude, if Mike Tomlin, if Aaron Boone became our manager, we made the playoffs every year for like 20 years. I'd be like, you know what? I'm okay with it. I'm okay with this. But their fan base are like, we're tired of just making it.

157.467 - 164.753 Evan Bradshaw

So they're right now at the point where it's like, we need a guy who can really get us over the top. And then that's why Rob Thompson and Aaron Boom become on the hot seat. But yeah.

165.014 - 170.278 Unknown

Is there anyone else I'm missing? Like who? I mean, Mike Schill obviously retired.

Chapter 3: What factors contribute to a team's managerial success?

201.987 - 210.094 Unknown

They were kind of in it. You know, it's like, yeah, there's enough of these teams or so many teams were kind of in it. You know, St. Louis is kind of in it.

0

210.074 - 221.231 Evan Bradshaw

And I guess with the St. Louis one, too, it's like new president of baseball ops, even though he's already there. So it's like, well, I am bloom on his own guy or is he fine with Ali Marmal? So I guess that goes into the equation a little bit.

0

221.251 - 230.985 Unknown

But yeah, I'm just rattling through them. I'm like, I honestly, someone who got let go, I wouldn't have let go. Like Taco Bell Deli, I wouldn't have let go.

0

230.965 - 253.75 Evan Bradshaw

um you know that's kind of the funny part about the rankings too is it's like you're hiring a guy but if he comes in in a crap situation how many years is he gonna get before it's like okay we're actually expecting a win and now if you blow it you're underperforming as compared to like you didn't give me a chance to win yeah and now you're firing me for not winning you know yeah well listen

0

253.73 - 275.55 Unknown

I know that your professional and personal existence have led up to this moment. So nobody knows more about managers. You studied their tendencies. You studied the farm systems. You studied the front offices. You understand the importance of the relationship between the president of baseball operations slash GMs and the managers.

276.09 - 307.79 Unknown

You understand you went through basically how they're going to deal with the media, which, by the way, as a quick aside, Evan, the red socks when they did hiring for the year that bobby valentine got the job they brought in managers managerial candidates to meet with the media like we were like oh wow it was like work like doing stuff with the media how they handled them Yeah.

308.251 - 322.633 Unknown

And I remember, I think, Sandy Alomar was there. A guy named Pete Mackinnon was there. He used to be with the Phillies, I think. Bobby Valentine. Bobby Valentine, actually, in that setting, he killed it.

322.613 - 333.17 Evan Bradshaw

Like he nailed it. That's the tricky thing, right? It's like, you're just bait. You're like, you're going in there and you're like, I'm going to treat them with the utmost respect. But then it's like, you come off a hard loss and they say, why did you pull a guy?

333.21 - 358.614 Unknown

And that's what it really, truly gets to, you know? And the other, the other great managing hiring story is one, you know, Kevin cash where Kevin cash was, he was the, I mean, think about it. He was like an advanced scout for the blue Jays. He gets hired in the bullpen as a bullpen coach for Cleveland, and then he gets these chances out of nowhere.

Chapter 4: What are the challenges facing the lowest-ranked managerial openings?

422.588 - 435.409 Evan Bradshaw

They said the Padres are interested in him and Passon and somebody else's came out and said the Orioles are interested in him. So he's going for three jobs right now, which is pretty nuts. I don't know what the heck's going on there. That's wild.

0

435.389 - 462.072 Evan Bradshaw

yeah i know crazy i think the main thing they're doing is he was really good in winter ball so that's what they're banking on i don't know i should know this i can get sean sprattling on the horn yeah was he he was a wbc he did something with a wbc right yeah yeah because when you look him up on google outside of obviously if i google him i can probably find that he probably has like a dr or a porter basically what you're doing is

0

462.052 - 470.1 Unknown

What you're saying is that you're going to do this exercise and you're going to present it to Albert Pujols. Here's the job you should take.

0

470.12 - 482.751 Evan Bradshaw

Here's everything. I remember when Mendoza, right before the Mets hired him, he interviewed for every opening in that cycle, it felt like, and then it was like, bam, the Mets. So Albert Pujols is on the way to possibly being like, all right, which one do I want?

0

483.191 - 496.023 Evan Bradshaw

And the other thing with him that's kind of odd is it feels like most managers are known for being managers, whereas he's going to probably be in the Hall of Fame this upcoming year as a player, and then it's like, bam, now you're a manager sometimes.

496.043 - 509.754 Unknown

Well, here's the thing. Kind of wonky. He's supposed to be the manager for the Dominican Republic in the WBC. Oh, okay. You think he'll say, I'll take the job, but I'm going to be gone a few weeks.

509.794 - 513.703 Evan Bradshaw

Nelson Cruz, I think, is the GM. You might have to find a new guy.

513.723 - 525.555 Unknown

Nelson Cruz... No, did he play or was he the manager? I don't know. Whatever. Yeah. Doesn't make a difference. But anyway, we'll make sure we get this list to Albert Pujols. Number eight.

525.575 - 547.628 Evan Bradshaw

So number eight, I have the Rockies. They're just the most bizarre organization of all time. Although... New GM. Yeah, with Cannon the GM and Cannon the manager, I mean, obviously their owner's the same, but it does feel like they... Because I've heard so many times, I think it was even on this pod, where they're like... Pretty much every organization operates in a similar way.

Chapter 5: How do team dynamics affect managerial choices?

679.772 - 684.057 Evan Bradshaw

Oh, you were between two jobs? I was between two different jobs. Oh, you were in the mix?

0
0

684.818 - 703.106 Evan Bradshaw

Derek Falvey called me, and the other guy called me, and I said, guys, I'm sorry. I'm too busy ranking these jobs right now. I can't interview for them. But they have some good players. They have Luke. Who's that? Oh, sorry, they're twins. I put the twins at number seven.

0

703.587 - 717.561 Evan Bradshaw

Strictly based on the fact that they have traded away pretty much their entire team, and I'm pretty sure this year is going to be a complete rebuilding year. Although they got some guys back on return, but they're likely to trade Joe Ryan. Pablo Lopez probably could also get traded.

0

717.601 - 732.977 Evan Bradshaw

They might be able to replace them with Mick Abel and Todd Bradley, but they're in a weird spot ownership-wise because they were going to sell it, then they weren't going to sell it, so that's kind of a weird thing. But they do have some building blocks, but it just feels like all of them get hurt so much. Like, if Byron Buxton is going nowhere, right?

732.997 - 754.764 Unknown

Yeah, a lot of the building blocks might not even be part of the organization. Like, yes, Byron Buxton will be there. We know that because he's proclaimed that he's there until he's 80 years old. He's not leaving. Yeah, yeah. But Joe Ryan, like you said, Pablo, these guys who are left behind. I mean, I got to imagine you know, that Joe Ryan has to be traded, right?

755.064 - 757.427 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, he feels like the most obvious one.

757.447 - 759.73 Unknown

Yeah, yeah. So...

760.03 - 761.833 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, I mean... It's just a weird one.

Chapter 6: What makes the top three managerial openings desirable?

874.983 - 896.675 Unknown

The thing is, they hung in there for a little bit. And you're like, okay, I can see how this works. Oh, look at what they're doing. They're getting these first-round picks. They're calling them up. This is the magical way of doing things. And then it takes a turn for the worse. And like you said, and then all of a sudden you're like, wait a second. Where's the farm system?

0

896.695 - 907.288 Unknown

Where's the development? I mean, nobody else does it like them. If nothing else, they should say... Los Angeles Angels, colon, nobody else does it like us.

0

907.308 - 927.41 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, because they've become like in the past, it was like when you go into the draft, it was like, well, this guy's the quickest to the majors because he has certain characteristics. Now it's literally like this guy's the quickest strictly because he's getting drafted by the Angels. If I was drafted by the Angels, I'd be psyched. You're going to be in the minors for about two minutes.

0

927.45 - 930.233 Unknown

I'm getting that major league per diem right out of the gate.

0

930.253 - 930.353

Yeah.

930.822 - 938.551 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, like Tyler Bremner, when he came out of kind of the blue and was the second pick, I think, in this year's draft, he must have been like, oh, crap, I'm going to be in the majors.

938.631 - 939.735 Unknown

I don't have roommates.

939.795 - 959.96 Evan Bradshaw

I'm not going to ride buses. Yeah, so it's just, it's like such a nutty organization. That those bottom three, like definitely the Rockies and Angels are in their different stratospheres. The Twins are just rebuilding, which makes them less attractive. But yeah, those bottom three are going to be interesting, whoever takes those jobs. Wow. All right.

960.16 - 971.173 Unknown

I can't argue with any of these ones so far. So congratulations on that. Tyler Bremner. Yeah, Tyler Bremner. Did he get called up?

Chapter 7: How do injuries impact managerial rankings?

995.866 - 1015.437 Evan Bradshaw

They got a new president of baseball operations, Paul Taboney. They have a couple building blocks in James Wood. Mackenzie Gore, if they don't trade him, obviously, I think that was kind of based on Mike Rizzo more so than needing to trade him. C.J. Abrams, Daylon Lyle, Brady House. Luis Garcia is another guy that they could trade, but he's also there.

0

1015.417 - 1037.541 Evan Bradshaw

Um, they do have like some decent positional guys that are like, obviously Dylan Cruz hasn't worked out great. Daylon Lyle's really good. He killed the Mets. James Wood is obviously insanely good. CJ Abrams is solid. So they do have some guys where if they can plug some holes, they might be good. Ownership in the past has spent like a ton with the, with the Max Scherzer era and all that stuff.

0

1037.601 - 1059.646 Evan Bradshaw

I hadn't spent in a while. So, um, I'm also curious with this job if Paul Taboney – I might be botching his name, by the way. No, no, you're not. You're not. You got it. You got it. I'd be curious if he ends up pulling a Mike Hazen and brings the Red Sox bench coach with him to Washington. You know, be like similar to what the D-backs did with – Yeah, I mean, I don't know.

0

1059.866 - 1078.004 Unknown

I mean, maybe. I don't know how much – Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. You don't know. I mean, obviously, Torian – I do know this is that – you know, you don't listen to me. You don't know how a guy is until he sits in that seat. But I know Paul a little bit and I do know that he's a very personable guy.

0

1078.084 - 1095.917 Unknown

Like he's, he's doesn't strike me as a guy who is going to come off for his manager and be like, this is how we're going to do things. There's going to be no communication. I think he's got that sense about him. Um, Um, where, and what I'm saying is that a manager goes in there, he probably isn't a bad guy to work with.

1096.578 - 1109.582 Unknown

Uh, Devin Pearson, the guy they just hired as assistant GM, same sort of deal, like very personable, like doesn't feel like, okay, you know what, this is gonna, they're guys that you won't don't mind being in the same room with like, which is,

1109.562 - 1132.009 Unknown

this is what we're doing hey you want the job like yeah if i if i'm taking the job i want to be in the same room as the gm i don't want to every time he comes in be cringing so yeah like here we go that's my that's my analysis on the there are two types of guys at the gm meetings you probably would want to have a conversation with and talk about how they might improve the nationals there you go yeah yeah exactly

1131.989 - 1136.316 Evan Bradshaw

You can add them to the list of guys that it's like, all right, we can talk to these guys.

1136.476 - 1140.342 Unknown

Paul Toboni, if you win the World Series, will you get a baseball support tattoo?

Chapter 8: What conclusions can we draw from the managerial power rankings?

1201.305 - 1214.337 Unknown

It's got like the bowl thing coming out of his nose. No, like the studs things. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm like, I'm pretty sure I rewinded. It's bizarre. Did he have those when I was sitting next to him?

0
0

1215.098 - 1241.005 Unknown

I mean, it's fine. Like he has a bunch. Listen, I mean, now I know why he didn't mind getting a baseball tattoo. He's a very experimental guy. I will say this. The tattoo he has of the World Series trophy is pretty solid on his ankle. I still say this, and I don't think, you know, who knows what the Blue Jays. Yeah. But their hitting coach, David Popkins.

0

1241.255 - 1265.292 Unknown

I mean, he might not be able to get a baseballs and boring tattoo because they might not win the world series and he might not even, he's only, he's a maybe for us. Yeah. But that Bruce Lee tattoo, it is so next level. Yeah. Crazy. So there you go. Next year, we're doing an entire podcast on that Bruce Lee tattoo. Tattoo. Anyway, I don't know where we got there, but number four.

0

1266.033 - 1287.787 Evan Bradshaw

Yeah, so number four, I felt like from here on up, its managers are going to bring in with the hopes of winning right now. So I got the Orioles. They got a solid core with Henderson, Westberg, Holiday, Couser, Basayo, Beavers. Trevor Rogers now, who looked like a Cy Young guy. And then Grace Rodriguez, who's been banged up. Adley Rutschman, it's kind of a weird spot for him.

1287.867 - 1298.783 Evan Bradshaw

I assume that he's going to stick with them because Basayo, I don't think, is the best behind the plate. But it's pretty crazy how he went from the best catcher in the game to a guy that they could probably get an insane trade package back for.

1300.165 - 1324.334 Evan Bradshaw

They have a pretty solid farm system because at the deadline, they traded away a couple guys, brought in some top guys, especially a couple guys from the... for O'Hearn and Liriano. Some of the guys the Padres gave them seem to be pretty good. The tricky situation with them is the owner hasn't exactly been like, I'll give a ton for free agents. So that's the weird part.

1324.634 - 1336.467 Unknown

We got to get our Diddy back on. Yeah, I was thinking about that. We haven't talked to him in a while because that was such a rush of adrenaline for Orioles fans when...

1336.447 - 1364.698 Unknown

Rubenstein Rubenstein yeah David Rubenstein yeah Rubenstein took over and you had made the Corbin Burns trade you get the new owner you get assigned all these guys to extensions and now honestly you know one of the things and I'm not arguing with you at number four for the Orioles that's fine yeah but can we look back at like this Uber team of North the Norfolk team it's a a
