Baseball Isn’t Boring
Who Has The Best Starting Pitching? (And How Lucas Giolito Might Change Things.)
26 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What teams are currently leading in starting pitching rankings?
to do there's absolutely nothing else to do as we sit here as I sit here recording this there's no transactions there's no things to advance conversations we had some things last week but As I sit here, this is the absolute best thing to do. Let's rank starting pitching rotation. Let's rank starting pitching groups. Not rotation. Groups for pitchers. All right. I took a look at MLB.com.
I looked at how they ranked them in terms of projected war on fan graphs. And Red Sox, Dodgers, Phillies, Pirates, Blue Jays.
Chapter 2: Why is it important to focus on starting pitching groups rather than rotations?
Those were the top teams. All right. Good for them. Congratulations. If you could hear me clapping. Congratulations. Congratulations to those teams. There's much more that goes into this. I think that when we talk about who has the best starting rotation, that's not necessarily what we should be focused on. What we should be focused on is the best starting pitching group.
Chapter 3: How did the Dodgers manage their pitching during the postseason?
Why? Because teams don't end up pitching when it matters the most in the postseason with the guys usually that you have in the starting rotation, case in point. the world champion Dodgers. I don't know if you know this. The Dodgers won the World Series, and they did so with Yamamoto being the only one pitching over 170 innings. The next up was Clayton Kershaw at 112 in two-thirds innings.
After that, the only pitcher of their starters who pitched over 100 innings was Dustin May, who I don't know if you know this, But he was traded the trade deadline. So the point is, is that you're bobbing and weaving your way. And as our co-founder, Joe Kelly, had said, revealed about the Dodgers, they're just wait and wait and wait, manage, manage, wait, manage, wait, manage.
Chapter 4: What makes Lucas Giolito a potential game-changer for MLB teams?
until you get to the games that really count, and then boom. And that's how it was with the Dodgers. Now, not every team's able to do that, but it is the lesson about if you can bob and weave your way through a season with a bunch of pitchers, with the guys at the top who are going to carry you, that you can rely on, that you can stop losing streaks, that you can build winning streaks with.
If you can do that, then fine, you get to the postseason and you're set up. But not every team was able to do that. So in other words, there's a lot of ways to look at this. You would like to say the Dodgers are the ultimate example. That's true. But another ultimate example when it comes to starting pitching is the Toronto Blue Jays.
And the Toronto Blue Jays, they were actually 23rd in war last year.
Chapter 5: How do the Toronto Blue Jays' pitching stats compare to other teams?
23rd. They're starting pitchers. So you would say, well, starting pitchers, what? What's going on? And get this. The other part about this is that after Gosman, who was your workhorse, I'll say it again. While we're talking through this, having an ace, having a workhorse, I think it's ultimately one of the most important things, and that's obviously why they wanted to prioritize Dylan Cease.
But after that, you had guys like Berrios, You had guys like Bassett. You had guys like Lauer.
Chapter 6: What factors contribute to a team's success in the postseason?
Those were the other three who pitched over 100 innings for the Blue Jays, and they weren't part of the starting rotation when the rubber meant the road in the World Series and the postseason. But you still have to have the guys, right? You still have to have the guys to get to the postseason. It's not – get all that twisted. Still have the guys. It's still important.
This is an important exercise. And so when they list the projected war leaders for pitching groups, Red Sox, Dodgers, Tigers, Phillies, Pirates, Blue Jays, once again, there is some value to that. Now, I would say this.
Chapter 7: Which teams could benefit from acquiring Lucas Giolito?
I would say there's a couple of things I want to say. And I've gone through some of these lists, some of these groups. I apologize if I'm going to leave out your team, but so be it. I will say this. Let's just say that Lucas Giolito, as we sit here, who was a free agent, is signed by one of these teams. You look at San Diego, for instance. What if he's signed by San Diego?
All of a sudden, you have Michael King, Nick Pavetta, Musgrove, and Giolito. It changes the dynamic. What if Giolito signed by the Yankees?
Chapter 8: How do the Red Sox and Dodgers rank in terms of starting pitching depth?
They have Max Fried, Radon, Cole, Schlittler, and Heal. All right. What if the Dodgers signed him? Well, you know, they jumped to the top of the list. What if the Tigers, who have been rumored to have interest in Lucas Giolito, signed him? Well, they also jumped to the top of the list. Scooble, Flaherty, Mize, Olsen, Melton, Drew Anderson signed.
But here's the thing, because I think that before I get to how I see the current starting rotations, I'm going to dare to dream on Chialito a little bit for these teams, and I get it. There's also Bassett, friend of the program. We love Chris Bassett. I think he would be a great acquisition for a lot of teams. You have Nick Martinez, same thing, friend of the program. Very, very valuable.
Scherzer, Verlander. So those guys. But here's the thing about Giolito, because I think people sleep on Giolito about how good he can potentially be and how valuable he can potentially be. Maybe because how he ended the season. Maybe it was because how he began the season. I don't know. But here's a stat. I think it's important, but I'm sure it'll be picked apart, but so be it.
Lucas Giolito allowed three or fewer earned runs in 19 of his 26 starts last year. I want to compare that to Edward Cabrera, who obviously was the big acquisition for the Cubs. Well, while Giolito was 19 of 26 in his starts, giving up three earned runs or less, Cabrera, 20 of 26. So just one game different. The team record in those games, 14-5 for the Red Sox, 14-6 for Cabrera.
So basically identical in terms of giving up three or fewer runs and both had 26 starts. So there you go. I mean, that should tell you a little bit that how valuable Lucas Giolito could be. So I'm just mentioning this because as I get ready to take a look at these pitching groups – again, I will not say rotations, pitching groups –
then I think that a lot of it can change with the acquisition of Giolito. And it's not just because we just did over our podcast with him talking about one singular movie, Marty Supreme. So, yes. So here you go. With the understanding that as we taped this, Lucas Giolito has not been signed.
I would say the Red Sox have, there is, when they get put at the top of the list because of Fangraph's war, I would say that with the way that baseball is currently constituted, I think that there is a case for them putting them at number one. Now, understand, they have three guys who have projected wars of 3.3 or better. That is Garrett Crochet, 5.6, Sonny Gray, 3.9, Ranger Suarez at 3.3.
That is something. The Dodgers, for instance, well, they have Yamamoto at 3.5, Blake Snell, 3.0, and then it drops down to Glasnow just under three. at 2.9 so it's not that it's not unusual it's not to say that they aren't a team that doesn't have you know the be all end all guy they could I mean I can pick holes in terms of where which way these guys might trend but still as we sit here
It's very important to understand that they have a top of the rotation. But it's more than that. We talk about going through a season and managing a season and, once again, bobbing and weaving your way through a season and having those options like Toronto did with Treyya Savage, that type of thing. The Red Sox have those guys right now.
