Chapter 1: What are the challenges Trump faces with shutdown messaging?

1.634 - 11.345 Beau

Well, howdy there internet people, it's Belle again. So today, we're going to talk about Trump's shutdown messaging falling apart.

12.607 - 37.12 Beau

As the US hurdles toward a government shutdown, Trump and Republicans, who hold majorities in the House and the Senate, while also occupying the Oval Office and holding a majority on the court, are having a very hard time gathering any consistent or even coherent messaging. The current course was set when Trump told Republicans, quote, don't even bother dealing with them.

38.362 - 62.983 Beau

He seemed to be under the mistaken belief that GOP rhetoric about a mandate was true. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party's main request to create a package they could support involves extending ACA credits so people don't lose health insurance and maybe refunding Medicaid after Trump's cuts. They're simple items for working-class Americans.

64.005 - 93.446 Beau

The Republican Senate Majority Leader Thune said, He then went on to say that now isn't the time. The problem for Thune's messaging is that now is kind of the only time. They're running out of time to fix the mistakes they made in Trump's one big beautiful bill.

94.647 - 108.844 Beau

On the other side of Capitol Hill, Speaker Mike Johnson and the House Republicans seem to be leaning into messaging that says they don't want to negotiate because it will undo Republican priorities in the one big beautiful bill.

109.718 - 112.903 Unknown

Um, yes, that's exactly what it will do.

Chapter 2: How do Democrats plan to respond to Trump's shutdown rhetoric?

112.963 - 125.681 Unknown

The bill Republicans force through over the objections of experts is opposed by a majority of people. Yes, Democrats would undo a number of the most harmful parts of the bill.

127.003 - 143.278 Beau

Trump, meanwhile, has become almost obsessed with attempting to say things like, quote, they want to have transgender for everybody. These people are crazy. The Democrats. So, if it has to shut down, it'll have to shut down.

Chapter 3: What are the implications of the Republican messaging strategy?

144.819 - 164.971 Beau

This isn't the first time he's bizarrely suggested something along these lines. I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but no, Democrats are not withholding their support because they want to make everybody transgender. Reminder, many Republicans in Congress actually want to extend the ACA credits.

0

165.772 - 180.073 Beau

But doing so now will be an admission that Trump's one big beautiful bill hurt America's working class to help the rich. For once, Democrats have been staying on message. Trump didn't want to negotiate.

Chapter 4: Why is health care a critical issue in the shutdown debate?

180.533 - 203.715 Beau

He can't get it through. We'll support it if Republicans fix the health care system they broke. It seems to be a winning message. The most recent YouGov polling says that while 25% of Americans would blame Democrats for a shutdown, 37% of Americans would blame Republicans, with 23% of those blaming Trump personally.

0

204.826 - 218.396 Beau

This is the last weekend before the shutdown, and time is running out for Republicans to decide. Is taking health care away from poor people really worth shutting down the government and damaging the economy even more?

0

Chapter 5: What do recent polls indicate about public opinion on the shutdown?

218.416 - 223.206 Beau

Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
