Well, howdy there, internet people, it's Belle again. And welcome to the Roads with Belle. Today, we're going down the roads to our seventh annual fundraiser. As some of you have already noticed, we have the tablets on the shelves, and the cases, earbuds, and gift cards are already purchased too. Last year we did it this way because of the changeover and jumping into a livestream that had that much writing on it was a bit much right away. This year we went ahead and purchased everything before actually doing the fundraiser because well, the buzzword of the year, right? Affordability. We didn't want to create a situation where people felt like this wouldn't work this year because things are tight for everybody at home and they couldn't donate.

We didn't want people to feel guilty if they normally donate and weren't able to this year. Believe me, we cover the economy and the layoffs. We get it. Hats off to Patreon supporters for providing that stable funding that makes sure stuff like this go off without a hitch.

What is this all about? So Every year, we reach out to domestic violence shelters and get a total of how many teens they have in the shelters over the holidays.

Then we put together the care packages and ask if there's anything else they need. And there's always something extra. One year it was cleaning supplies. One year it was bras. One year it was game consoles. We already have a request for cold weather coats and scarves and hats and so on. And more will come, they always do. So, the obvious questions are why teens and why tablets? Well, the Marines do a great job through Toys for Tots of taking care of younger kids. Sometimes in shelters, the teens who are old enough to understand what's happening end up as an afterthought because of all of the chaos involved. Then we do tablets for a combination of practical and emotional reasons. The younger kids may monopolize the only TV at the facility, and this gives them something that's theirs.

And that's where the emotional aspect comes in. When a teen ends up in a DV shelter, regardless of how it happened, They've lost control and stability and This gives them something that's theirs. It might only be a ten inch screen, but it's a space for them. We know some of you have started similar things in your area. Some feedback we got has led to us getting a few of the tablets that are designed for younger kids with the protective case built in. We've done this for a number of reasons. Some of the kids getting them may be more prone to dropping them if they're startled. Or even throwing them due to the stress and emotions of the situation. And then something that's also worth remembering is that these situations happen across demographic lines.

There is no stereotype that holds up to even the smallest bit of scrutiny. It happens in the trailer parks in the richest of homes. It also happens in homes that have teens with disabilities. Those teens who may have a hard time holding the tablet due to a physical disability. Or who may knock it off their chair? also benefit from those with the more resilient built-in cases.
