Welcome back to the podcast. Today, I have a special guest. I love when I have guests on. Her name is Kandi Motzek, and she is a business and mindset coach. And we're going to talk today all about earning money by the way of creating a side business as a coach. And so Kandi is going to walk us through how we can do that. I'm so excited for this conversation because I think...
Some of you may be thinking about it. And here we are. We're going to talk about it. So Candy, please start by just introducing yourself and telling the listeners how you got started in this space.
Well, to begin with, thank you for having me, Jermaine. I'm really looking forward to the conversation. And how I got into this space is that I was a full-time corporate person. I was a senior director for years and years, originally an engineer, and then I moved into corporate real estate management. And it was a great job. I had a great title, I had bonuses, benefits, the works, it was wonderful. And I wanted something different. And so that's why you and I are talking is because I really, I started my side business on the side while I was still working full time. And then I chose to transition out of it. But But the neat thing is, is I didn't have to. I could have had my side business and continued my regular role if I had chosen to.
But for me, I made that choice to exit.
Awesome. I'm going to love this. I work full time and I have a coaching business that I absolutely love. And so I think I can speak to my experience around this as well as we go through this conversation. So let's start with the basics. How does someone know if they're even qualified to be a coach? Do you need a certification? Can you start with what you already know? What would you recommend?
Yeah, so I think there's a bit of a continuum there. We all are adults. And so we bring life experience and skills and expertise. You know, for example, if you're used to leading a team or you're used to leading complex projects or initiatives, or you've done a major career transition yourself, you've got that experience. And so that is a great place for you to start when you're thinking about it. We never want to pretend that we don't bring our whole self, our whole life to it. But coaching is also a specific skill set. And so you may decide you want to be a coach and you can start right away. But I am a big believer in continuing education and continuing to learn and grow our coaching skills. So always go and look for some great education that's going to help you in a practical, really what I call boots on the ground, you know, like you're actually out there really coaching individuals.
So you're going to do both. You're going to bring your expertise in, but you're also going to learn coaching skills.
Oh my gosh, that's so good. So that's pretty much my story. And you talked about bringing your whole self. So in my professional life, I'm in sales and marketing, right? And so that's not what I'm coaching on though. What I'm coaching on is something that I went through personally, which was, you know, I had a horrific time with money growing up and in my twenties and thirties, and I was able to change my life completely. and turn things around. So that's what I coach on. So when I first started, I was just using my own experience, what I learned. And one thing I noticed was that I was telling people everything I did, but they would try and then fizzle out. And that's when I knew that there was a missing piece and I needed to learn the skills of coaching.
I needed to go deeper than just telling people, okay, this is what I did, so you do it too.
