Why are traditional life stages failing women in their 50s and beyond?

Lucy Patterson 0:00
I don't think the systems around us expected women to still be this loud, visible, opinionated, ambitious, curious, creative, commercially relevant, and occasionally ragey into their fifties and beyond. But here we are, still working, still changing, still reinventing, still asking the awkward questions, still starting businesses and reassessing careers, relationships, identity, purpose and ambition. And meanwhile A lot of the systems around us still seem to think that life works in neat little stages. Study, work, marriage, career ladder, retirement, fade gently into obscurity wearing beige linen.

How does living longer expose gaps in our current social and economic systems?

Lucy Patterson 0:33
Except real life doesn't look much like that anymore. So what happens when people start living longer lives than the systems around them were designed for? And what happens when women potentially have another thirty or forty years ahead of them, but the structures around them still quietly expect them to retreat? What happens when identity keeps evolving but institutions don't? Hey, I'm Lucy Patterson, and this is The Long Game, a podcast for people noticing that the old models feel increasingly out of sync with the lives we're actually living.

What topics does Lucy explore through design thinking and the longevity economy?

work, visibility, financial insecurity, reinvention, creativity. menopause, ambition, AI, caregiving, identity, and the strange cultural reality of being alive at a point where human beings are suddenly living much longer lives than many of the institutions were ever built for. And
Lucy Patterson 1:24
honestly, I think we're only just beginning to understand what these longer lives are going to do to us culturally. So this podcast is where I process some of those thoughts out loud. Sometimes with the kind of perimenopausal brain fog,

How can we play the long game by redesigning identity, culture, and careers?

Lucy Patterson 1:36
that sees me walk into a room and immediately forget why I'm there, but always with curiosity. So join me for honest, intelligent conversations about identity, systems, culture, curiosity, and building lives and ideas that can actually last. We're all living longer, so we all need to get better at playing the long game.
