Between Two Beers Podcast
Is Being a 'Good Bugger' Enough? Values, Identity & the Team Behind the Vision
13 May 2026
Chapter 1: What does it mean to be a 'good bugger' in business?
Welcome to the latest episode of Accidental Business Owners. The premise of the show is that two years ago, Seamus and I left our nine to fives to go all in on the Between Two Bears podcast and the other businesses we were building alongside it. That's when we realized we needed some help.
We linked up with Di Foster, who's a business and mindset coach, and decided our coaching sessions were worthy of being broadcast, so we created this show. Each episode is a new coaching session where we work through the raw realities of building our business. This episode is just Dai and I, a 1v1. We cover identity, our growing profile, and what's happening behind the scenes.
There's a few tears in this one. Accidental Business Owners is supported by Odoo, making business smarter, easier to manage, and more affordable. Try Odoo free for 15 days at odoo.com. Enjoy. Good morning, Steve.
Hey, Di, how's it going?
It's been a while, mate.
I know. I was thinking it has been a long time since we've done a 1v1.
Have we got tissues?
Well, that's what I'm worried about. I'm never quite sure what's going to pour out of me in these.

Chapter 2: Are values alone enough to build a lasting business?
And I said it was the most relaxed I had felt over a weekend. Yeah. since we started the business. That's amazing. Basically. Yeah. I used to go to the gym first thing in the morning and then I would go straight from there into work. So I'd be in at sort of 7 in the morning or 7.30 because I felt like there was just so much I had to get to and that was the time.
And I haven't felt like that for the last, I mean, she's only three or four weeks in.
Yeah, three weeks.
Three weeks. But for the last week, week and a half, I haven't felt like I've gone home and spent time with family. I've gone home. I go to the gym first thing and then I go home at seven and then I spend an hour with the kids before school.
Which is a great hire, eh?
Great hire.
Yeah, good fit. Love that. What else is going on? So a lot's going on at work. How are you feeling with it all?
I'm feeling good. Yeah. It's been a wild year. It's been... I don't know. Last year, we got to December of last year and I thought, well, how are we ever going to top that year? That was incredible. And we're in May and you feel like you might have done it.
And we're in May and it's just like all of these things that, and we spoke about these a few episodes ago, we're sort of bubbling along in the background and now they have come to light. There's one more big one to come, but it's just, yeah, it's good. Like all of these things are good. Everything is going well.

Chapter 3: How does identity shift when a business grows unexpectedly?
Like when it comes to business, it was like I think you were looking for some sort of like, you know, word like vulnerability and authentic in a business sense that you could hang your hat on. And you said, has been a good bugger enough? And I remember saying, I think it's everything.
And I just, just putting it back to you, I just think that that is what I've seen you live for two and a half years. And I think it is amazing to see it pay off. The other thing that I've learned from you, so just like embracing that and having real clarity. But the big thing that I've learned from you, and not everyone's like this, but I've said it before and I'll say it again.
I feel like with you, I hound you to be really clear with the vision. Do you have any idea why I do that? Because I think it sounds boring. I get bored of myself asking you, going, what does it look like? And what's it going to look like? And have you thought of this? Do you get sick of it?
No. Oh, good. No, I enjoy it. Yeah, I enjoy it.
Do you know why I do it?
Because you believe that when I see it, it will happen.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, because you're relentless as well. Like once you're fixated on it, it's like you'll just keep working towards it no matter how many roadblocks there are.
Does that make sense? Yeah, it does. The one that springs to mind is like we did this list of goals at the start of the year and we didn't actually make them public because you said let's have a chat about those before they go out. But one of them was take my boys to the World Cup. And that's going to happen.
That's amazing. Tears are coming. How does that feel?

Chapter 4: Why is having the right team essential for business success?
No, be honest. You wrote that down without really thinking it through, which is exactly what you do. And then it happens. That's what freaks me out with you.
Yeah. And then all of these sort of like pieces of the puzzle fell into place and I realised it was a reality. And then it's like, holy shit, can they fly to Vancouver by themselves from Auckland to Vancouver, a 13-hour flight? They've never travelled internationally. Yes, they can. Can we sort it out and can they get home if, you know, the All Whites progress? Yeah, it's fine.
Like, you know, we can make it work.
Are they going to be flying on their own?
They're going to be flying on their own. Oh, thank you. I checked it out. Like, yeah, you can, if you're over the age of six, you can do it. That's insane. But I, when you think about like, and there's so many moments of this whole podcast thing that have been a wild ride, but it started as a football show.
Yeah.
You know, it started in my garage as a football show. Full circle. And to go to the World Cup and do a football show and have my boys watch it, like, wow, that's kind of dream come true stuff.
Full circle moment. What's the problem with the boys going to the World Cup? Well...
I'm always glass half full, so I don't see a problem. The obvious one is what happens if one of them gets sick or something happens to one of them and I'm over there working and then I need to be with them and I can't fulfill the duties that I'm going over to do. But I have support there.

Chapter 5: What strategies can help overcome being a bottleneck in your business?
Yeah, cool.
So we will be into the flow of it. We're going to record in the mornings. It's a shorter thing we're doing. You know, I've sort of thought about how that is. Someone can look after that. I actually think they'll enjoy watching the process at the age that they're really inquisitive. Yeah, I don't have an issue with the cognitive load.
With just thinking about that, though, like you've done Dave Wood's course, you've done some of that stuff. Just think about some tools that you might want to pull out of your hat. Do you know what I mean? To just make sure that you're just recovering as you go.
Yep.
Does that make sense?
Yeah.
Just looking ahead, because as you said, the glass is half full. There's never, ever going to be a problem. It's like the rest of us are going, really? Okay. Can I just point out a few things to you?
Yeah.
They don't know. The other thing is they don't know yet.

Chapter 6: How do identity and habits differ in personal development?
You know, I will keep reminding you of this. It didn't just happen, though, did it? I mean, I think the reason you get slightly emotional about it is because this has been on the back of a lot of work to get to here, hasn't it?
Yeah. Yeah, it has. And even that is kind of... hard to think about sometimes. I don't know if this is just like me repeating myself, but things have been moving really fast, like at the last year and more specifically the last six months. And I often think about who I was when we started the podcast and who I am now and how different they are.
When I started, I was a sports editor for the Herald. So my job was sort of updating the website, writing some headlines, editing people's copy, thinking about what angles needed to be covered. I was a cog in a machine and I had a boss and a boss and a boss. And I would start at six and finish at two and didn't think about work at all after that.
And how different that is from the role I play now and what is going on.
You find yourself in some interesting rooms, don't you?
Yeah.
Or at some interesting tables. Ones that you might not have expected to be in.
Yeah. And there's something weird. I was thinking about this in the shower the other night. It's like identity shift. And I was in this massive meeting on Friday and there was like two huge bodies involved and I was kind of running the meeting. I had the agenda and I was asking around, do you have questions? Do you have questions? And kind of running through this TV show we were creating.
And it's like, well, who, how the hell did I get here? Like I'm the same guy who was, you know, sort of sitting quietly in a meeting at the Herald a few years ago, getting told what to do.

Chapter 7: What role does emotional intelligence play in business relationships?
Eating away. Yeah, like in time. And then it's just weird how it all played out.
It is really interesting, though, that sort of niggle feeling. I had the same thing when I was bringing up my son and we made a very conscious family effort that I would work very part time. And I felt impatient. I felt impatient knowing that work would get busier and I'd have a different life than I was actually living then. Now I feel incredibly grateful that I did that.
But at the time, I felt restless, I think would be the word.
Yeah.
Do you often think, though, that like now, you know how you said everything's sped up in the last six months? that it seems like you're like an overnight success. Like, where did you come from? You're everywhere. Every time I open a bloody app, here they are again. It's like, can I not get away from you?
A little bit. But I feel like because of this show and because of like ambassadors and things that we have been bringing the listeners along for so... Along the journey? Along the journey for so long. Like this was a really cool comment we got. I think it's from Andrew Miller who runs Raw Coaching here. And when we announced the One New Zealand partnership, it's some really nice words.
And like we're all alongside, like we're all alongside you because you've brought us along for the journey. So for those that listen, I feel like it's kind of like you can see how it's been made.
But then there will be others that, I had a meeting last week with a guy that came down from Auckland and he didn't know, he was quite successful and high up in his industry, which was broadcasting, but didn't know a lot about the podcast. And I sort of ran them through all the different things going on. And when you say it like that to someone new, like, holy shit.
You guys have quite a lot on your plate.

Chapter 8: How can reflecting on personal growth enhance business strategy?
That's what you want?
A little bit. Because you keep saying that I will manifest the future, for me, I don't think I'm trying to work it out, right? Like I'm trying to think of what the future looks like. And I don't think necessarily I've got the special power. Like it has happened. But when you're asking me to map out the future, I'm just doing my best.
I actually had a back and forth with Claude is kind of how I got to that. Challenge me on all of these things and help me sort of work through it. And then I arrived at like, well, what do I love doing? I love doing this. Would I do this for another 20 years? Absolutely. Maybe not in podcast form, but in some form, like being the talent and like asking questions.
Just sitting down having a chat.
Sitting down having a chat. I mean, it's my dream job. So why would I think about doing anything else? So I'm quite comfortable at that thought.
You say that, but then there's other things in that email around, you know, that you want to build businesses, right?
Yeah, because and, right? You always say and.
But I think the and goes with that sort of new identity because everyone knows you as a podcast boy now.
Yeah. So the and part is the building of businesses. Yeah. And... We did it with B2B Speakers, which we sold. We're doing it with Reflections. I'm attracted to that idea of building. And we had a bit of a chat before we started about why that is. And I don't really know. I like the thought of building with people.
