Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
All right, welcome to Valerian Barker, brought to you by Capital One. Capital One, giving credit to over 4 million Canadians. And counting. Well, that was quite a weekend in Major League Baseball. Here in Toronto, the Blue Jays took 2-3 from the Cleveland Guardians, winning consecutive series for the first time this year.
Chapter 2: What were the highlights of the Blue Jays' series against the Guardians?
And as John Schneider said, the goal right now is to basically stack series wins on top of each other. I mean, it's... 27 games in the season, that's what you're going to do. Hopefully you put a winning streak together at some point. But in the meantime, stacked series wins on top of each other. Tonight, the Jays open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, who are...
crisis team i don't know if i and players don't care they were well that's actually not one or two might well we'll talk to rob bradford later that's not true there come on there were no there were a lot of well what do i know all i know is that a bunch of players talked to the boston writers afterwards and they weren't happy so whatever Well, I mean, they weren't supposed to be doing that.
Weren't they told not to say anything? Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. Guys talk off the record. They do.
Chapter 3: How is the Blue Jays' bullpen hierarchy structured without a defined closer?
That's the way it is. I heard a shortstop and a reliever say something. On the record. There are a lot of other guys off the record that talked about it. Anyhow, the Red Sox, they have, of course, you probably know by now, they rinsed basically their entire coaching staff, reassigned Jason Veritech. I don't know what the hell that means.
But they have added three coaches to the staff in time for tonight's game. Jose David Flores will serve as the interim. Bench coach Pablo Cabrera will be the interim first base coach and outfield instructor. I mean, I don't know if I, being the interim outfield instructor, probably wouldn't float my boat. Jack Simonetti's been named interim hitting assistant. Better not having a title.
Chapter 4: What improvements has Kazuma Okamoto shown recently?
There's a whole bunch of interims going on there. With the Boston Red Sox, Chad Tracy, of course, the interim manager. As the Red Sox come into town for the first game of the three-game series, Dylan Cease. Jay's flip-flopped his start with Patrick Corbin. Dylan Cease gets a start tonight. Ranger Suarez, the Red Sox big free agent signing. of the offseason.
Ranger Suarez getting the start for the Red Sox. So there's a lot going on.
Chapter 5: What are the next steps for Jesús Sánchez in his development?
Rob Bradford joins us later on. Chris Rose joins us as well. And Caleb Joseph. But let's start by talking about Barker's Blue Jays, who took two of three games from the Guardians this weekend. And Mr. Barker, I'm sure those of you who watch the games are aware, did yeoman-like work on Blue Jays Central.
You know, I did my part, I think. I think that's what you try and do. You just, you know, don't screw it up to where it makes everybody else look bad.
Yeah, or make them want other people back.
There. But, anyhow. That's it. Way to be positive about it, Jeff. I am positive. You know? I am positive. I'm a positive thinker, bud.
Yeah, I know you. Trey Savage will get the start in the second game of the series, by the way, tomorrow against Peyton Tolley. And I guess the Jays will have to make a roster move to get you Savage on the roster. So they've also announced that Eric Lauer has been moved to the bullpen.

Chapter 6: Why did the Red Sox decide to fire manager Alex Cora?
Probably no great surprise. We talked about as pitchers get back, there's a bit of a competition there. So there's a lot to talk about this weekend, but I do want to start with the pitching. I want to start with Patrick Corbin. You know, again, the Jays want Patrick Corbin to give him a chance, preferably to keep the ball in the yard. He did that. Yesterday he gave them a chance.
It was the four and two-thirds innings. What do you think the state of the rotation is right now, Kevin? We saw Max Scherzer on Friday night was not very good, two and a thirds.
Chapter 7: What changes have been made to the Red Sox coaching staff?
What would really scare me, he got two whiffs, 39 swings. That's the first time he's had two or more whiffs in a game in which he's thrown 50 pitches since May 26, 2011. talk about that Kevin Gossman obviously really good on Saturday but let's start talking about the pitching what do you think the state of the pitching is right now and I'll just flat out ask you um
What do they do with Max Scherzer? Because it's good game, bad game. Good game, bad game.
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's, you know, you got to be really in tune with your players. You got to, you know, sort of know what they're going through. You know, kind of how they can get it back on the tracks. I know what I saw. I saw bad velocity. I saw bad location. I saw bad spin. Those three things add up to balls leaving the yard.
You're getting hammered and you're not giving your team a chance. That's kind of where he's at. Do they feel comfortable with him going forward? I have no idea. I mean, that's...
Chapter 8: How is the current state of the Red Sox pitching affecting their performance?
I know they like Patrick Corbin. I know they like his changeup. I know they like he's using both sides of the plate. Slider is pretty effective. I know they like that what you mentioned, him giving them a chance. I don't think it's about that anymore. I think it was about that when he first got here. It ain't about that now.
It's about that they think he's one of the starters that can go out there and get after a lineup and do things to both sides of the plate, especially with the changeup and Yeah, I mean, I don't think you can argue that. His stuff's been good enough. So, yeah, the state of it, I know they got two Bahamas at the top. They're trying to work everybody else in the best way they know how.
I think they've taken care of their bullpen. You know, I saw Louie Varlin yesterday getting loose in the sixth inning. You know, everybody yelling, screaming, saying he's the solidified ninth. Not where I was standing. I know when I was standing, he was getting warm and throwing a couple of pitches to the catcher. what, the last couple outs of the sixth inning.
You know, for me, John is going to use that bullpen, especially certain guys, the way he wants to use them. He doesn't have a certain inning that he's going to name everybody to, which for me is the smart way to go about this. Yeah, I don't know about the staff as a whole. I know they've won the last five out of seven games. They've won back-to-back series. They've won a Cease and a Gosman start.
Tyler Rogers has had four holds in the last seven games. Ernie, Okamoto, and Sanchez have all had at least ten total bases. Louie Varland's had three saves out of those seven games.
I wanted to ask you about Louie Varland in the ninth inning. And you talked about that. He was up in the sixth inning, warming up in the bullpen. He did get the save, 30-pitch save on Saturday. It certainly wasn't clean. He got a 30-pitch save on Saturday. He came back on Sunday to get the save as well. 20 pitchers gave up a single, but followed that up with a couple of punch-outs. So...
Because we saw him warming up in the sixth inning. We are, and I should mention Jeff Hoffman pitched yesterday as well, pitched a scoreless eighth. We really are still in committee territory, aren't we? There's no absolute guarantee that Louis Varlin gets the ball in the ninth inning every night.
No, if there's a situation in the seventh inning where John needs to throw him, depending on what the scoreboard's telling John and where the other team's at in their lineup, Louie will be throwing in that inning. I like that. I'm with you. You know, even with Jeff, they don't have a ninth inning guy. I've been saying this forever. I've said this to whoever wants to listen.
We've been saying it on this show ever since the seventh game of the World Series happened. Like, and before that, right? Maybe the trade deadline. Halfway through the year last year, we were saying that, you know, that ninth inning kind of needs to be taken care of. If you want to make a deep run, now the deep run part of it, we might have been wrong with that.
