What is the opening preview and why are the Blue Jays’ upcoming games crucial?

Jeff Blair 0:04
All right, welcome back to Blair and Barker on Sportsnet 590 the Japan and Sportsnet. It's an off day for the Blue Jays before the start of a crucial three-game series in Cleveland against the Guardians, who currently hold down the third and final wildcard spot. Uh In the American League. Must win. Must win. It's this is the seventh consecutive m most important series of the year.
Kevin Barker 0:33
I think it kinda started after they got swept by the Rangers. You know, they were they were they were at five hundred and they got swept and then it kinda it kinda About the first week of August And then the Seattle thing. I I I think that's really when it started.
Jeff Blair 0:51
Anyhow. The uh Jays are uh A bunch of other teams very close to the Guardians. The standings and of course we're in that position now where Jays beat the Guardians in these three games, it helps everybody else as well. So You know, there's a lot there's gonna be a lot of that going on in Such is life in the American League wildcard race, right? Jason Stark? He is a senior MLB writer with the Athletic and Coast of the Starkville podcast. That's where we are, right? You help everybody out every time anybody who beats the Guardians helps everybody out, at least until Texas goes ahead of the Guardians, and then it doesn't matter anymore.
Jayson Stark 1:26
Yeah. It's beautiful. Look, that was a big weekend for the Jays. I think they might have ended the Marinder season. Oh so that's one team theoretically you might not have to worry about.
Jeff Blair 1:34
Yeah, no, it it was uh yeah, I mean it's like anything else in the wild card race. There's only so much you can do with the teams ahead of you, but boy, it's good to It's good to help uh to help bury a team. uh help bury a team behind you. It's always fun to do that. Um there's a lot we want to talk about, including your research on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the lock of home runs at home. But before that, uh I'm gonna credit our friend Tom Ferducci. I did not know this. Uh but uh the Dodgers apparently have had their worst August in sixteen years. Um we know that, you know, they haven't been hitting Very well. I mean looks to me like they they just look tired and I understand they're the Dodgers and they'll you know
Jeff Blair 2:20
They're probably just getting bored of of of waiting around for for October every year. But are you con Do you think Are we seeing anything from the Dodgers, Jason, that should concern us? Beyond this.
Jayson Stark 2:34
Yeah I I I like I personally am. I it's really hard to tell with them because They're the only team that gets to have a seven month spring training. Right. Yeah. They're just biting their time or when the real season starts. The only season that they seem to care about. But I you know, I don't see them as a super team as they're currently constructed. They're certainly not playing like one, Jeff. Since the fourth of July They have a losing record. They have a worse record than the Mets. And you mentioned the hitting. Um, their offense uh not only does it not look scary, it doesn't even look as pesky as it looked last October and Like the numbers support this. They're next to the l next to last in the league.
Jayson Stark 3:24
In run scored. Since the break. And that's pretty crazy, right? Uh their bullpen's very unsettled. I I feel like they're vulnerable.

Why could the Los Angeles Dodgers be vulnerable this season according to Jayson Stark?

Jayson Stark 3:33
You know, if they have to play a team like the Padres in the wildcard round. They're beatable. They are.
Jeff Blair 3:42
Yeah, I think too, you know, further to your point. We've seen Dave Roberts enough to be able to kind of I'm not gonna use the word decipher, but sorta parse some of his post game. comments and you do get the impression that there is concern on his part. about about what they're seeing. Now maybe, you know, maybe Will Smith. I mean, I've always kind of thought he's maybe more important to that lineup than a lot of people think. Uh maybe that makes a difference, but you really do get the impression that uh yeah, that that Dave is there's a little bit of concern at least there.
Kevin Barker 4:16
And Mookie Betts, Jason, I think that's the one thing with Dave Roberts is he's having a real tough time. It just seems to me like from afar listening today, like where do I put him?
