All right. What are we doing here? Welcome back to Blair and Barker. There's a lot of hand signals going on here. I got it. Hand signals I don't understand. Pick a finger. There you go. Chris LaRue is our Blue Jay Central analyst. Joins us on Blair and Barker. How are you doing, man? It's not on. It's not on. Push the on button. Red button. Oh, Chris's lights aren't coming on. He's not working. Oh, there we go. It's on. There you go. Boom. Got a weather forecast for us? Yeah. I don't know.
No, in Washington.
You guys know more. Well, I'm not talking about here. You guys know more than I do. You guys are always on your iPhone. Five to eight. I already said that. I already told you. Yeah, but it doesn't look that way. It doesn't look that way. Anyhow. I know somebody that's there. What? I know somebody that's there.
All right.
What'd you make of Max last night? I honestly, I like the first inning. The stuff was good. We saw the fastball. By the way, there's a tornado watch in Washington. You're sorry. So, yeah, so there's your weather watch. I like the fastball. The changeup was good. For me, it was just too many pitches out of the strike zone, nibbling a little bit too much. After that first inning, after you got out of that jam, it was just a little bit too much nibbling. It seemed like he didn't really trust the stuff. He didn't trust it enough to go right after guys and pound the strike zone. I mean, I could be wrong. Maybe he's just not totally back or in sync where he can throw strikes consistently to the corners. But first inning I liked, second inning, and then into the third inning it was just
How did Chris LaRue evaluate Max Scherzer’s first start off the IL?
Just way too much nibbling and the stuff dropped off. You didn't really see many 94s, many 95s. Kevin points out no whiffs on the fastball or slider. Yeah.
Yeah.
And that's an issue, right? Did you say he's 42? 42. I'm 42. You're not pitching. You don't look 42. I haven't touched a baseball in 10 years. You should. I haven't either. Think about that. And this guy is competing at the highest level. So when I think about Max Scherzer, it's funny. I think about all the accolades and the fact that he's a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame and all those good things and the records and the World Series championships. The most impressive thing to me is just staying healthy. Staying healthy to age 42. Like, I don't even know how that's possible. And I'm sure you feel the same way. I don't think he has really been healthy.
Healthy enough. Healthy enough.
Setting a modern-day record for cortisone injections, I think. Yeah, I mean, you got a lot of money. Go home and spend it. That's kind of where we're at with this thing. I mean, is he going to get traded to a legit team that can win a World Series other than the Dodgers? I guess you just have to ask yourself. I mean, if you're a team in contention, do you want him? I just mentioned the whiff thing. You know, he talked after the game like he felt like he had a really good start. He wasn't watching the same game I was watching. The first inning, I thought the first inning was fine. Even the two base hits early on, they were on a fastball at 95, down in the strike zone, away. and then a fastball at 94 down in the strike zone.
So two pretty good pitches. It's just a matter of was he setting them out upright? Was the sequencing correct? And then you kind of have to tip your cap to the batter for actually hitting that baseball the other way. But I don't know. I kind of agree with you. The whiffs are an issue. Oh, like go home and spend your money? No, no. Seven years ago, I probably would have gone home and spent my money. How about Beaver? What's he have to do tonight? More of the same. I think the biggest issue with Bieber, I think, was just coming back from such a major injury. It takes time to find the command, find the release point, find the spin on the breaking balls. It's never the velocity coming back from major injuries.
It's always trusting the stuff and then the spin on the breaking balls. And we've seen over the last couple of games that it seems like he's trusting the breaking ball more.
