Chapter 1: What is the significance of the State of Origin selection process?
Matty, I'm heading up to Brizzy for a big week of footy soon, you in? Of course. I'm super keen for the Friday matches, but I'll be there all weekend.
Yeah, same, massive games on. The whole week's going to be chaos. Actually, I was thinking, my place is just going to be sitting empty that whole time. And I'm thinking like, why wouldn't I just put it on Airbnb and make a bit of cash while I'm away? And you've been to my place too. Good spot, good location. I know people who do it every time they go away. They call it a cheat code.
A couple of nights while I'm away alone and I would make enough extra income to pay for our next trip to Queensland. That is actually a great shout. I'm telling you, it's a no-brainer. If your place is just sitting there, you may as well make it work for you. Your home might be worth more than you think. Find out how much at airbnb.com.au slash host.
And this episode is brought to you by Macca's Magic Moment. In Magic Round this week, I'm going to be down there, or sorry, up there with Kayo and McDonald's going around filming content, obviously having a feed at McDonald's too. All McDonald's breakfast is the best ever.
Chapter 2: How do the hosts feel about their team's chances in the upcoming matches?
What are you going McDonald's? I'm going bacon egg McMuffin, two hash browns. That's it. Boom. Knocked in. And a bit of pancakes if I'm feeling crazy.
As you know, Kempe, I'm a pretty simple man. And you've nailed the order. I'm going the double bacon egg McMuffin meal. Or I might just go bacon and muffin meal with an extra bacon and muffin. It's simple, but it works.
It's so funny. I'm the exact same. I can't improve perfection.
It's goaded. So I'll be there this week. Make sure to come in. Say hi. Thanks to McDonald's. What is up, ladies and gentlemen?
Chapter 3: What are the main criteria for selecting players for the State of Origin?
Welcome to another episode of The Roundtable. That's right, the yearly show where we sit down as if we are coaches and we select a New South Wales side and a Queensland side. We debate positions, how they're going to play, all that good stuff. Now, the great Gurino, he's not here today. He's a bit crook, unfortunately. But Timmy, mate, he's back. He's back. How you going, brother?
I'm good, mate. And look, as podcasters and content creators, we basically are coaches, aren't we? Yeah, of course. Look, it's that time of year again where we all need to live for our state. And I know Loz will be out there listening to this, eagerly awaiting this podcast to drop, just to help him before the teams drop.
Of course.
On Saturday or Sunday or Monday or whenever they choose to do it this year. Good to be back.
Yeah, very, very good to be back. Matty, how are you feeling, mate? Nervous? I'm just happy Timmy's back in the studio.

Chapter 4: How do injuries impact team selections for State of Origin?
Of course.
It's been too long.
I'm quietly optimistic this year. But what I will say is... Like, I was so confident going into game three last year. I will never, ever, I don't care what the circumstances are, it could be like the Blues versus the Maroons have recruited the Coomba Stallions reserve grade side. I'm not going into a game confident because it just backfires every time.
I'm never like, I'll get to be honest, like game three, that series, like if you're being fair dinkum, like I was going in going, look, it's going to be a tough series for Queensland. Like they, we had like, we were barely, we could barely pick edge back rollers. You know, DC got dropped after game one. Like it was a,
But then, yeah, so we got to what game two, the game two square up always happens, which we knew was gonna happen. I thought going into game three, I was thinking, mate, with everything the Blues have been through the last five to six years, I was like, this is their chance to just put Queensland to the fucking sword.
Now I know there was some other stuff that went on for Queensland, but I just looked at the two sides and how informed they were compared to the Queensland side. And for, I think, look, maybe I'm speaking wrong, but, like, I feel like Blues fans could have summacked a little bit better if it was, like, a close loss in game three.
Like, if it was, like, okay, that, you know, all the stuff that was going on in Queensland just got them across the line. But the fact that it was, like, 20-0 after, like, what was it? 24-0 or something half-time?
Half-time was 20-0.
20-0.

Chapter 5: What strategies do the hosts propose for the New South Wales team?
I've erased it from memory 12 months ago.
Well, I think as well, we won up there in Brisbane, right? That's another thing that was hard to stomach. We're like, sweet, we've won in the hard bloody stadium. I remember there was chat that like, oh, this team isn't even scared of Suncorp anymore. We haven't won since then. Then the next game, Queensland got to a huge lead as well. But if you remember, the Blues came back right at the end.
They actually nearly clawed it back. And I remember me and you, Timmy, we're talking, we're like, look, if we just show up a half a game, we'll win. And that was wrong because we didn't show up a half a game. Queensland did show up in the first half. It was 20-0 at halftime and there was just no calling back.
So yeah, that was the toughest series I've ever endured as a Blues fan in my entire life, including 2020. And I was there in 2020. So yeah, tough.
And it's just like the Queensland side couldn't have played a more perfect game in that first half.
That's what made it a little bit easier to stomach as time has gone on. It was a 10. I remember saying at the time it was an absolute 10 out of 10 performance.

Chapter 6: How do the hosts evaluate the Queensland team selections?
So, yeah, that was the only saving grace.
That was, yeah, the silver lining. Yeah. In any sport, no matter how hot of favourites you are, no matter how confident you are going into a game, if a team plays near enough perfection, you sit there and go, you can only applaud, right? Like tough to stomach as a blue supporter, but what the Maroons did in game three, and in particular that first 40 minutes, you go, too good.
Well, it's like the grand final with the Penrith Panthers, like, Obviously it sucks and you Devo, but I was like, mate, they made one error the whole game. And then you had the greatest 20 minutes you've seen in a long time. So I was like, sometimes it just, it happens. It happens.
I will say it has been a weird feeling going into this year because I've been, I'm so content with what I got last year from footy. Like I got obviously the Broncos premiership and Queensland winning. So like, Obviously, I'm excited about Origin. I'm keen and everything.
But if I lose, it's not going to sting as much as, say, another year just because I'm so filled up and happy with what I got last year. I'm going to dine out on that at least for a couple of years, I reckon.
I remember in 2014, all in one year, the Blues broke the drought, South broke the drought, and Australia won the Ashes. And it was like, my life has just peaked in sport here. And it hasn't reached that peak since.

Chapter 7: What are the key differences between New South Wales and Queensland strategies?
But I know what you mean. Yeah.
For example, let's say Broncos struggle this year. Of course, I'd be disappointed. Yeah, we want a friendly. It's okay. We won a grand final last year. It's okay. So anyway, let's get into it, boys. It's time to discuss the 17 or the six-man bench as well now for the Blues. Let's start at fullback. Obviously, between Tedesco, between Edwards.
Now, just quickly before we start, if Tommy Turbo was still playing the way he was playing, would have he been in contention for the fullback for you?
He would have been my fullback.
Yeah, okay, wow.
He would have been my fullback.
Yeah, and I was just truly salivating at the prospect of a fully fit Tom Truboy, because he looked so good prior to his injury this year. And he's never really, we've had the luxury of having such good fullbacks, not to say we don't now, but like, you know, Teddy's aging, Dylan Edwards, you know, coming off a loss.
Because we've had these unbelievable fullback stocks, Tommy Turbo, we've been able to play at centre, wing, wherever it might be. But him coming into it this year, it kind of looked like to me prior to his injury this year that he went, you know what, I'm just going to go 100% everything I do.

Chapter 8: What are the final thoughts on the selected teams for State of Origin?
And if the hammy goes, the hammy goes, or I get injured, so be it. Yeah, and I think probably a bit like his counterpart in, we assume, Reece Walsh, he's that good Tom Trubojevic that he can single-handedly win you a state of origin series on his own.
And the fact that we're not going to see that opportunity and potentially not in his career, like just a three games, him at fullback fully fit, it hurts.
Yeah. It's one of the worst misses. Not misses because it just hasn't lined up, but I reckon it's one of rugby league's great tragedies. Tommy Turbo's never playing fullback for the Blues.
We're going to sit back and say Tom Trebojevic is arguably the best fullback of all time. Now, his lack of availability over the years will cost him that, you know, when compared to Slater, Lockyer and any others in contention. But to sit back and say Tom Trubojevic never actually started a game at fullback for the Blues, which I don't think he has.
He hasn't, no.
That's mind-blowing.
That is crazy. Because you just imagine with the quality around him, what he could do at fullback. Like, wow. But the good thing is Tedesco has roared into form this last probably six weeks. I think it's actually coincided with Reece Robson's return. I think their combination has just been phenomenal. Edwards has also been really, really good. Timmy, speak to me, mate. Who is your fullback?
What are you thinking about?
James Tedesco.
