News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Lizzie Burden. And I'm Caroline Hepker. ASML has reported fourth quarter orders for its chip making machines as the rapid development of artificial intelligence infrastructure boosts demand. The Dutch chip equipment maker announced bookings of almost 13.2 billion euros versus estimates of just under 6.9 billion euros.
Speaking to Bloomberg, the firm's CEO Christophe Fouquet said the performance bodes well for the rest of the year.
We are looking at a record quarter. We are looking at a record year. So this is very good already for 2025. And in the course of last year, we sometimes had some doubts, basically, on what AI will do to our business. Because, to be honest, it took a bit of time to convert some of the great announcements we heard from the AI company to semiconductor.
But the last three months have brought a lot of clarity.
ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet speaking there as the company also announced a new share buyback programme of up to ā¬12 billion by the end of 2028. Despite the strong results, the company also says it may cut back about 1,700 jobs in the Netherlands and in the United States. The shares are up 4.7% now.
Now, the dollar is close to its weakest level in four years after suffering its deepest one-day drop since last year's US tariff rollout. The sudden decline came after President Trump said that he didn't think the currency had weakened excessively. The president was asked by reporters if he was worried about the dollar's drop.

Chapter 2: What are the latest results from ASML and their implications for the chip industry?
And so I actually think the U.S. is going to want to see a stable dollar.
Robert Kaplan speaking there, as investors have increasingly shifted into gold in what's becoming known as the debasement trade. The price of bullion rose as much as 1.5% today, having jumped 3.4% yesterday to hit a new record high above $5,200. Currently, the gold spot price $5,293.
Shares in LVMH, meanwhile, are down 7.5% as the group's key fashion unit struggled with weak holiday season demand. The firm revealed yesterday that organic sales in its fashion and leather goods division fell 3% in the fourth quarter, more than analysts expected.
The news comes as luxury companies struggle to bounce back from a slowdown that followed the post-pandemic boom as cost of living pressures and geopolitical uncertainty weigh on spending. LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault said the group faces a difficult environment in 2026 and will limit spending this year.
Chapter 3: How is the demand for AI impacting ASML's fourth quarter orders?
Lastly, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrives in Beijing today alongside a business delegation that includes several banking executives. Standard Chartered, HSBC and Barclays will all be represented as the Prime Minister tries to deepen trade ties with China. Bloomberg's James Walcock says there are a number of opportunities in the region.
50 UK company CEOs are going, according to China's Ministry of Commerce. And it wants investment from China. It wants exports. It's worth noting that China currently accounts for roughly 0.2% of foreign direct investment into the UK versus America's 33%.
Our UK politics reporter, James Walcock, who was speaking ahead of the visit, which comes just days after President Trump threatened Canadian products with 100% tariffs after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Beijing trip earlier this month. Bloomberg understands that Keir Starmer is aiming...
to downplay the UK's Chinese imports in a bid to avoid a similar flare-up, which could potentially endanger the US-UK trade agreement.
