News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Nathan Hager. And end of the week cheer on Wall Street as Friday trading gets underway before the long holiday weekend for MLK Day. That is the sound of the opening bell from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. And at the open, the S&P 500 is higher by two tenths of one percent. That's a gain of about 10 points.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is just in the green, up about a tenth of one percent or 70 points. And the Nasdaq Composite is leading the early gains at the open up four tenths of one percent. That's a rise of about 100 points. We'll get back to the markets in a moment.
But we continue to watch the reaction to Maria Karina Machado's move at the White House to give her Nobel Peace Medal to President Trump.

The Venezuelan opposition leader spoke after meeting the president at the White House. He responded on Truth Social, saying it was a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. This morning, Machado told Fox News the president deserves the prize. She calls him the liberator of her country. Norwegian officials are reacting with shock.
One former politician calls it a total lack of respect for the award from the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Fears of a wider protest crackdown are building in Iran, with the country now under its longest Internet blackout on record. Golnar Motavali heads Bloomberg's Iran coverage.

Chapter 2: What financial trends are emerging at the start of the trading week?

White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett says President Trump will unveil a plan to let people dip into their 401ks to make a home down payment. Hassett previewed the proposal in an interview with Fox Business.
We're still talking about the mechanics of it, but suppose that you put 10 percent down on a home and then you take 10 percent of the equity of the home and put it in as an asset in your 401k.
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett says President Trump will introduce the plan at next week's World Economic Forum in Davos. This morning, the White House is set to announce a plan for big tech companies to pay for their own data center power needs.
President Trump and several northeastern states are pushing grid operator PJM to auction off 15-year electricity contracts for tech firms. Mandeep Singh is global head of tech research at Bloomberg Intelligence.
These hyperscalers spent almost $400 billion plus in capex last year. And a lot of those investments are going to come online in the next 12 months. So you have to ask yourself, how are they going to source the power? And that's where I think some of that inflation when it comes to sourcing that power is going to show up in this form.

Independent power producers like Vistra, they're down 8%. Constellation Energy is down 7%. The Miami Hurricanes face the Indiana Hoosiers for the college football title on Monday.
