President Donald Trump has delivered a primetime TV address as the United States becomes more deeply embroiled in its conflict with Iran. However, rather than focusing on the war, he instead accused China of interfering in the 2020 US presidential election. The allegations threaten to further strain ties with the world's second largest economy as Trump seeks to bolster Republican prospects ahead of November's midterm elections. U.S. intelligence agencies have previously said they found no evidence of interference by Beijing in the 2020 vote. However, Trump claims China stole hundreds of millions of U.S. voter records.
Over a period of years, starting during the 2020 election cycle, the People's Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China's illicit acquisition of 220 million US voter files. That information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences, and other sensitive data that would be needed to register to vote.
Reacting to Trump's comments, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington has said it has never and will never interfere in US presidential elections.
