I'm watching the plows go by on Queens Boulevard, typically a very busy stretch of roadway that begins just beyond the Ed Koch 59th Street Bridge, goes all the way to Jamaica, Queens. It's a six lane roadway service roads on both sides. Weekdays there's always traffic. A plow going by right now today. Very little in the way of traffic. So far, I've seen a whole bunch of plows coming by, very often three in a row, with a sanitation department car leading the way, a police department car at the back, all part of a massive snow plowing operation that's got 2,000 plows out there in Forest Hills, Queens. Now, the storm has grounded thousands of flights. Data from FlightAware show more than 17,000 cancellations. More than 80% of departures have been canceled at Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK airports, while cancellations at Washington Reagan National topped 90%. Here is Memphis airport official Glenn Thomas.
The airlines are operating on a very reduced schedule, but our crews have been working 24-7 to keep the runways clear of ice and snow. And it has been a challenge, but they've been up to it. The league has postponed tonight's game between the Memphis Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets. And the Dallas Mavericks were unable to fly to Milwaukee last evening for their game against the Bucs.
In Minneapolis, people brazed freezing temperatures last evening for protests and vigils after a second fatal shooting there by federal agents on Saturday. Border Patrol agents shot and killed Alex Preddy, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, after he was subdued on his hands and knees. Now, Preddy had a permit to carry a weapon, which the agents found on him before the killing. The Trump administration is blaming Minnesota state and local officials for the fatality, calling Pretty a domestic terrorist. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison spoke at a press briefing earlier.

Meantime, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is vowing to block a spending package this week unless Republicans strip funding for the Department of Homeland Security, thereby increasing the risk of a partial U.S. government shutdown.
