Chapter 1: What was the outcome of the Blue Jays vs. Orioles game?
Well, Jeff, another game that was 1-1 headed to the eighth inning. Must be a day that ends in a Y around here. But thankfully, it is a win for us to discuss this evening. A second straight night. The Jays come away with a 2-1 victory. Their third straight win. And now just a game under .500. They are 28-29 on the season.
Yeah, and the last time they were there was May 2nd. They beat the Minnesota Twins.
Chapter 2: How did the Blue Jays' defense perform in this game?
They were 16-17 at that point in time. The Twins took the final game of that series. And then, well, the Jays went into Tampa Bay and... We'll just probably leave it at that. After a game in which the Marlins tried to steal nine bases, we saw the Marlins putting a lot of pressure on the Jays.
The Jays had to be nearly perfect tonight defensively, barring that misplay by Kaz Okamoto in the first inning. They really did play well defensively. And, you know, I think this is one of those good pitching and good defense games that people talk about as being integral if a team is trying to get back to 500 and trying to get over 500.
And most importantly, as John Schneider would say right now, just win series.
That is Jeff Blair.
Chapter 3: What impact did Andrés Giménez have on the game?
I'm Sho Ali. You're listening to Blue Jays Talk here on the Sportsnet Radio Network. We're also streaming on sportsnet.ca and on the Sportsnet app. You can give us a call tonight. 416-870-0590. 1-888-666-0590. Star 590. On your cell. You can text us as well. 590-590.
Chapter 4: How did the young players contribute to the Blue Jays' success?
Name and location. The people's text line is always open. Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Yeah. Great, great defense tonight, Jeff. I mean, the Jimenez play early in the game. There were some great Ernie Clement plays down the stretch as well. A great play by Valenzuela. Eric and Ben were just talking about it. He gets Alonzo at first base.
Chapter 5: What role did Patrick Corbin play in the Blue Jays' victory?
I mean, that pop and throw from Valenzuela looked almost simultaneous. Like you, I've rewatched it a few times. Now you can barely see him standing up. He does that so fast. So yeah, great defensive work. I mean, you're going to need some of these,
wins over the course of a season it's just i don't think you can rely on scoring two runs a game and uh and winning that game every single time i think this kind of team can because that was that was a hallmark of last year's team but yeah it's uh it is nice to see given that the defense has been a little suspect at times to start the season yeah and you know i think we're seeing a lot of we're seeing a lot of good signs especially when it comes to
the defense late in game, something that has been a bit of an issue for this team. You know, we saw Jeff Hoffman with the inside move the other, the other day, uh, pick off a runner today.
We saw Brandon Valenzuela and, and again, a gutsy call to, you know, to, to, to make that, to make that decision, a gutsy call by Vladdy to put the play on and make that decision that could very easily have been disastrous.
Chapter 6: What are the challenges faced by the Blue Jays this season?
But, uh, as, as you know, the Jays get out of that, get out of that jam. And yeah, it's, It's nice to see. John Schneider likes to use the phrase tighten up, and it's really nice to see that starting to happen with this team. And, again, I can't stress this enough. This is a team that is without a couple of regular guys, right? Alejandro Kirk, a terrific defender, focal point of your defense.
You know, Addison Barger. He's got that arm in right field. Again, an important part of your team.
Chapter 7: How does the bullpen's performance affect the team's strategy?
So for this team to be able to tighten up defensively while they've still got some odds and ends, you know, some guys you didn't think would be everyday players in the lineup is pretty impressive.
It is, no question. And I mean, gosh, don't look at Will Wagner's stats right now for the Padres. It's going to favor the Blue Jays, I think. Jeff, before we continue, before we get to the text, before we get to the phones, let's get to the player of the game brought to you by Capital One. Capital One giving credit to over 4 million Canadians and counting.
I feel like there are a number of players we could go with today. It's all so close, but where are we going today?
Yeah, I mean, you know, Brandon Valenzuela, we talked about that, the play to end the inning. But I've got to go with Andres Jimenez.
Chapter 8: What are the implications of upcoming player returns for the Blue Jays?
You know, the Jays have had all sorts of issues scoring off or scoring against starting pitching. They've had all sorts of issues getting an early lead. Jimenez gives them the early lead tonight against Chris Bassett. And on a night where I think we're going to spend or we have spent so much time talking about defense, who better to kind of
pick as the face of the team defensively than Andres Jimenez. So Andres Jimenez would be my choice for player of the game. But you are right. You could have conceivably picked
a couple of other guys you could have picked Jeff Hoffman you sure if you really wanted to but it's got to be Jimenez for me the 412 foot bomb top of the third was the game's only run for the Blue Jays for quite some time so you get some credit for that of course bottom of the third the sprawling grab and a laser beam throw to first for the out on Taylor Ward I mean he's he continues to impress you know it's funny I was chatting with this about this with
about, you know, the kind of ABs Jimenez grinds out as well. And more often than not, I find they are at least competitive. I mean, it wasn't that long ago. It was the series in New York where, and I think John Schneider had said this post game where he referred to the AB where he worked the bases loaded walk. I think it was on Schlittler to as the, as the AB of the season, essentially.
And I think you, you see, you see results like that or you're seeing it, I should say more and more often from, from a guy like Jimenez, which is really cool.
Yeah. You know, listen, Siddle, Barker and Caleb Joseph all talk about his swing and how good his swing is. And I know that his numbers, particularly batting average, they don't always look great. But it is remarkable how often he...
surfaces in important games and either makes an important defensive play, which I think you just assume he's going to do that because he's a good defender, but he does something offensively. To me, he's the ultimate pass-the-baton guy in some form. And, you know, tonight, he didn't just pass the baton. He threw it into the seats.
Yeah, no question. He, it was also pretty funny to see. I don't know if you, I mean, they, they highlighted it on the broadcast, but I'm not sure how many people saw this, the, the two kids who caught his ball and then who, what an inning later caught the ground rule double.
I didn't see that.
