Chapter 1: What role does Tyler Heineman play with the Blue Jays?
Well, that was a fun one. Felt like the Toronto Blue Jays won a bunch of games like that last year and not trying to do the identity and style of play thing. But last year, they were a very good team who once May came around, breaks started to go their way. That is not something that has happened very often this year, certainly on the injury front and then within games.
It hasn't been a season where a lot of stuff bounces in the right direction for them, whether you want to call it batted ball luck, spiritual batted ball luck, karmic batted ball luck, whatever, the baseball gods, anything like that. The Jays haven't had a lot of games like yesterday where they play pretty good baseball. At the very least, they pitched unbelievably well.
And then it looks like you lose it. You tie it up in the sixth. Louis Varlin, who has allowed one earned run all season, allows his second in the top of the ninth. And you're now down one. You have not been able to get much offense mustered against the Phillies over a couple of games. Your offense has not been particularly strong this season in general.
And you're about to face Yohan Duran, who, yes, is on the second night of a back-to-back, but has been... very, very, very good. A ton of swing and miss, a ton of ground balls, and it does not look like a guy, even pitching two days in a row, that you should be able to get something against if you are a sputtering offense. And
The Jays get a Jesus Sanchez single that, you know, maybe that was a playable ball. They pinch run. Yo Hendrick Penango bounces a single that gets runners on the corners.

Chapter 2: What does Brandon Valenzuela's future look like with the team?
You pinch run, you steal, you get a wild pitch, whether that's Duran, you know, with two pinch runners and a stolen base, he's looking over his shoulder or overthinking it or something like that, or he just uncorks one that helps you tie the game.
And then Brandon Valenzuela of all people, a guy who was the third catcher to start the season, a guy who was acquired in a pre 40 man depth move for will Wagner, who was, you know, even like we, we talked about him a bunch on this show because we have prospect people on and Brandon Valenzuela actually joined the show last year. And, uh,
You know, this is a guy who was well thought of for his defense and game calling, but not necessarily for his bat. And he has been such a huge find for the Blue Jays this year. By the way, Will Wagner was called up to the majors and started at DH and hit fifth yesterday for the Padres. He went one for two with a walk.
Chapter 3: What insights does Mitch Bannon provide on the Blue Jays' recent performance?
So good for Will Wagner. And that pays off very briefly for the Padres there. But... Yeah, Brandon Valenzuela comes through with a walk-off, and it's great. Brandon Valenzuela gets the double Gatorade dump, and cool for Charles McAdoo to be on the other side of the Gatorade dump as a recent call-up as well.
And there are just a lot of things that go right in that inning on the back of Dylan Seas striking out 11 batters with one of the most swing-and-miss heavy performances we've seen in baseball in a couple of years. So, yeah, it's a long season. You're going to win games in different ways, but it did feel like that had not been ā a game that bounces their way very often this year. And it did.
So they have a chance to take a series tonight. Max Scherzer will return off the IL.
Chapter 4: How did Adam Macko perform before being sent down to Triple-A?
They'll try to face Jesus Lizardo, who when he was here last year, gave up a boatload of runs, but is very up and down. And sometimes you get a Jesus Lizardo who looks like Christopher Sanchez. And sometimes you get a Jesus Lizardo who looks like, I don't know, Chris LaRue instead of Christopher Sanchez. I'm kidding. Chris LaRue is on the line though.
He of Sportsnet, color commentator for the Blue Jays on the Sportsnet Radio Network joins us now. Chris, what's up, buddy? I don't love that segue. I had no way to segue back into it. I didn't know what to do.
Chapter 5: What advice does Shane Greene offer to younger pitchers?
Sorry, man. How you doing? I'm good, man. I'm just waking up. It was a late night last night. As you know, I've had many discussions with you about my late nights and early mornings, but it's going well right now. Appreciate you making it on for 10 a.m. Next time, we'll try to time it when you're already in studio for an afternoon road game or something like that.
Man, it might have been a late night, but it was for a pretty fun game. Brendan Valenzuela comes up with that walk-off, and I was just kind of talking before you came on that it doesn't feel like they've had a lot of games go their way like that this year. What can that kind of do?
I'd imagine that was like a pretty nice exhale game where a couple of bounces go their way and they, you know, for lack of a better term, maybe steal one from Yohan Duran and the Phillies. It was, it was a pretty cool game to, to broadcast. I don't know if you were in the building for it.
You're normally in the building early and then you, you scoot out, you scoot out before the end of the game, but no, no, I scoot to seats. I go sit with the people, Chris. All right. I don't, I don't mean to call you out in front of everybody, but that's just, that's just your schedule, man. You got to wake up early.
Chapter 6: How has Shane Greene's YouTube channel impacted his journey?
Well, yeah, I don't really, I it's more that I would, you know, rather have a beer in my hand than the media room coffee, you know? All right. I think the most interesting thing about about the game last night is the fact that I think the discussion about Brandon Valenzuela is about to get real serious. And I know that there's been a ton of discussion.
And I don't mean to get into this too early in this conversation, but there's been a ton of conversation.
Chapter 7: What techniques does Nolan Perry use for pitch mixing?
all over the place, including probably John Schneider and Ross Atkins. Hey, what do we do with this guy? Do we have room for him on the roster? And just the way he went about his business yesterday, game-winning run, standing at third base, facing arguably one of the best closers in baseball in Duran. And we heard him after the ball game. He wasn't trying to do too much.
He was just trying to make contact with the baseball. And that's exactly what he did. He got an elevated sinker and ripped that thing over the shortstop. I mean, it's pretty incredible what he's done. And it's not so much the numbers. It's more for me just the comfort level when he comes up in big spots. And that's a veteran swing, a veteran moment for him.
This guy's been in the big leagues for less than two months. But he's making such a big impact.
Chapter 8: What are Nolan Perry's thoughts on playing in Vancouver?
I truly don't know what you do with him. I don't. I mean, he deserves to be in the big leagues. He arguably deserves to be a starting catcher in the big leagues. But as we know, the blue Jays have all Alejandro Kirk and he's an all-star, he's an all-star catcher. He's an all-star defender and all-star hitter. He takes care of the pitching staff, but so does Brandon Valenzuela.
And I know it's a small sample size, um, But, man, he's been really, really fun to watch. And so is Johander Pinyongo. We saw him get sent down earlier this season, and now he's up in the big leagues for what it looks like to stay. And I would love to get your opinion on it because you're a brilliant baseball mind.
And you know the ins and outs and all that stuff more so than I would, at least from a brass perspective. But I truly don't know what you do. And I want to see him playing every day, whether it's in Buffalo or whether it's in the big leagues. And if you can't make that happen, then he has to be in Buffalo.
And I know that I probably am on an island with that thought now, especially after how last night ended. But man, what a special moment for him. It was a fun game to be at. Yeah, it was a very fun game, and yeah, I mean, my answer on that is, you know, the roster management stuff, the maintaining depth, that is stuff that is important to me generally, and...
it is only as important as can this guy significantly help you with a playoff race. We went through this with Trey Savage last year where there are costs to adding a prospect to the 40-man too early. You got to DFA someone. You got to option him if he gets optioned. If he gets hurt, it counts as service time.
There are all these considerations, but it didn't really matter if Trey Savage could help you win a playoff game. And you're not in a spot right now where you're thinking, can Brandon Valenzuela help us with a playoff game? You're thinking, can he help the team get to the playoffs?
And I think that the gap between him and Heinemann at this point is just wide enough that you've got to keep him on the Major League roster. And you might lose Heinemann. I don't think he'd get claimed. Maybe he accepts a Buffalo assignment. That's something that the team would have to work out with him, obviously. And I hear your concern about him not playing every day.
I don't know that Kirk's going to catch five days a week right away. Could you get Kirk a DH day on one of Springer's off days and get Valensville an extra start that way? I guess the other component is too, is like, he's going to have to learn to do the part-time role at some point because Kirk's not going anywhere. So I, I don't know, man.
I definitely see the development component and the playing every day component. But you got a playoff spot to make. And I think right now the gap between him and Heinemann in terms of what he'd give you those two, three days a week is just too wide. Yeah, I mean, I definitely agree with you that there's a huge gap between him and Heinemann now.
