Chapter 1: What led to the Blue Jays' offensive explosion in the first inning?
Well, Caitlin, you said it yesterday, but this is a Blue Jays team that just hasn't had that many laughers through the season's first 20 games. It's been all scratching and clawing here and there essentially all year. And then tonight, the Jays explode for eight runs in the top of the first inning. They chase Ryan Nelson after he gets just one out.
We get that laugher after all to salvage the series in Arizona. A 10-4 Blue Jays win as they leave Phoenix. Kevin Gosman gets the run support. He deserves. He nabs the win as well as first of the year. And the Jays improve to 8-13 on the season with the win.
Yeah, I mean, look, we tried to come in today optimistic. We did. We tried to manifest this with our attitude. And, you know, we won't take any credit. All the credit goes to the Blue Jays and especially their bats. But this is exactly the kind of game that they needed, not just to get the win, but to get a win where it wasn't stressful.
You know, I think that Gosman comes into the game and already has eight runs of support. He's able to kind of feel himself into the game a little bit. The offense looks like they're having a good time. Up and down the lineup, you've got guys racking up hits. I think everybody but Myles Straw had a hit in this game, and I think Myles Straw had a walk. So everyone was getting on base.
Everyone was doing their job. And after what happened last night, what has been happening on the road with this team, I think this is a great game to ā hopefully turn the tide a little bit for this team. It is just one game at a time, of course, and one game isn't going to change their whole season overnight, but at least they get a happy flight to Anaheim.
Yeah, it's a short flight, but I'm sure it will be a fun one for the Blue Jays. That is Caitlin McGrath. I'm Sho Ali. You're listening to Blue Jays Talk on the Sportsnet Radio Network. Chapter 2: How did Kevin Gausman's performance impact the game?
to start a game. That last happened on September 15th, 2007. That was an 8-3 win over the Orioles, also at the Rogers Center. So they actually made some history today by tying some franchise records, which is pretty incredible.
Yeah, very nice for the team. And It goes back to a little bit of what we were talking about yesterday where the Blue Jays in yesterday's game, they racked up a bunch of singles and they had 12 hits, but it was just those hits weren't coming in a timely manner. They weren't sequencing those hits in a way in which allowed them to score runs. Whereas today you saw...
Exactly that kind of pass the baton mentality that they had most of last year. And you have seven straight hits. You're racking up runs early. Everyone's doing their part, passing the baton, moving guys along. That's exactly what the identity and the energy of their team was last year. And we haven't seen much of that. And so...
In the first inning, you're kind of thinking, like, where has this group been? This is the Blue Jays team that we remember a lot from last year. Of course, not every game last year they were jumping out to huge leads. But just that kind of work up and down the lineup that we were used to seeing, I think, was kind of a welcome sight for a lot of fans today.
No question. Yeah, no question. I think a lot of people were kind of waiting for this. We'll see if this can be a turning point. I mean, Reid Detmers awaits them in Anaheim, who's a tough customer. But generally, you know, you can hope that this is something they can build on. So we'll see if that happens tomorrow. But for now, definitely one of the more fun wins of the season.
Let's get to the player of the game brought to you by Capital One. Capital One giving credit to over 4 million Canadians and counting. Who are we going with with the player of the game today, Caitlin?
I think we're going with Nathan Lucas. He's a guy that he's been a topic of conversation for us this weekend because, of course, we learned about the fact that he's been dealing with this vertigo illness that has been impacting him deeply on the baseball field. And finally, he felt healthier, was feeling more like himself this past weekend, and it completely showed.
So today, three hits for Nathan Lucas, including two in the first inning.
Yeah.

Chapter 3: What historical records did the Blue Jays tie during the game?
I mean, Okamoto, it's kind of funny because prior to the Hoffman blow up yesterday, I kind of thought the two players we would talk about the most, apart from Max Scherzer, would have been Nathan Lucas and Kazuma Okamoto. And they both played big time roles in a 10-4 win today. And Okamoto in particular, right? So bases loaded double in the first. Solo bomb off of Hoffman, two ends, in the third.
And then a walk in the fourth. You know, you hope he like you hope this is something he can use to move forward with the season because, you know, even you and I were talking about this even towards the end of the game. You know, maybe over the course of the season, we talked about in the pregame as well. Just looked a little tentative.
Maybe give him some grace because it's not only a new role for him. It's a new country for him. And yeah, I mean, some people had said, hey, well, you know, Murakami is off to a hot start. This is true, but no two people are alike, right? So I tend to not compare the two too closely at the very least. But I did think today Okamoto looked just a little more comfortable in the batter's box.
Maybe that had something to do with him getting the monkey office back, so to speak, yesterday. Yeah. That swing, which I really love, looked so much less tentative, a little more at ease. And John's not wrong. Maybe you want to see him improve continually, right? Especially against things like off-speed pitches.
But yeah, I mean, it's hard to pick on Okamoto because he had a phenomenal game today.
And again, that's kind of like, if you can get that production or anything close to it, if he is batting seventh going forward, and I know injuries play a role in where guys are batting right now, but when the whole team is healthy, that's kind of what you have dreamt on when you picture what his contributions to the team could look like.
Yeah. And of course it's a process for him. And so you're seeing him look more comfortable, look more aggressive on the pitches that he knows that he can do damage on. And that's exactly what he was able to do today. And you have to wonder too, the fact that he's kind of making these adjustments and he's trying to get used to the speed and the rhythm of the major leagues and
of course the team that he's joined is in this massive rut. Like it's probably a little more stressful for him in that situation. A bunch of guys that he was probably going to lean on in terms of like leadership, uh, and guidance like George Springer, uh, and, uh,
I mean, Addison Barger hasn't been in the league that long, but certainly someone like George Springer not being in the lineup can probably have an impact. And so I think that it was great to see his performance today.

Chapter 4: How did Nathan Lukes perform after his vertigo diagnosis?
everything considered the fact that they're out to a big lead, the fact that he was coming in kind of cold at that point, his warmup was, you know, 40 minutes prior. Like he, he's almost having to start his warmup again, like in, in game. So I think there was just probably a lot of different factors for it.
And the fact that he, by the end of his outing, he got, uh, got close to where we're, we're used to seeing him reassures me that it was nothing serious. And that, uh, The entire time, the coaching staff and Gosman had a handle on it, and it was something that they weren't worried about.
416-870-0590, 1-888-666-0590, star 590. On your cell. Let's go to the phones. Let's get to Ian in Ridgeville to lead us off here. Ian, what's up?
Hey, guys. Thanks for taking my call. I know we won today and all, but I just want to talk about the bullpen and Jeff Hoff in particular. I think that so far this season, we've let him on a long enough leash. And my personal opinion is to have Jeff Hoffman go in the seventh inning as your seventh inning guy. And then Rodgers or Varlin, one for the eighth, one for the ninth.
At least try that for a little bit. And if Hoffman needs to make a couple save appearances here and there, that's fine. But I don't think the Blue Jays are going to be, at least the way Hoffman's pitching now, I don't think the Blue Jays are going to be doing anything Even later in the season, I can't see Jeff Hoffman pitching his way out of this tremendously well.
through the remainder of the season. He will get better, I'll tell you that, but I don't know if he can get too much better.
Right. Ian, I appreciate the call. It is interesting. We got a couple of texts, by the way, just before we get into Ian's question. There's a text here. Okay, here it is. This is from Al in Vancouver. It might be safe to bring Hoffman in for the bottom of the ninth with the Jays up by six. And where's the other one? Um... Yeah, Gilbert from Woodstock. Great game, but call me crazy.
Seemed like a good time to throw Hoffman back out on the ninth to see if he could bounce back. I honestly also thought about this very briefly. Now, he did throw, I forget how many pitches he threw yesterday, but I did figure he was just generally, yeah, so he threw 26 pitches yesterday.
I feel like that was, like, regardless, unless it was a real emergency in the bullpen, I feel like he was, just by the sheer amount of pitches he threw, even if it was a win,

Chapter 5: What strategies are being considered for the lineup against Reid Detmers?
Who is your starting nine versus Detmer tomorrow? Is it Lucas's defense versus Jimenez's bat in right field versus Sosa DH-ing, assuming Jesus...
Sanchez a catcher and Varshow on the bench so yeah I think just off the bat I mean I'm I'm not sure if it's going to be Valenzuela or Heinemann tomorrow but I'm assuming whoever it is will be batting tomorrow based on how that's happened yeah pretty much since Kirk went out I would guess because we were talking about this in the break right so Detmers is a lefty I'm I'm guessing you could go either way here right you could have you could have Schneider bat lead off I'm guessing Lucas
maybe sits tomorrow, honestly. But you could have Schneider lead off and Clement, who has been batting second these last couple, at least at times, I didn't say these last couple of games, but at times he's bad second. And if you assume Vladdy's going to stay in the three hole, I can see Schneider, Clement, Vladdy.
I could also see Clement, Schneider, Vladdy, honestly, if you wanted to do that, because Clement does have the splits that work so well against lefties.
Yeah, I mean, do you want to just keep Clement where he's been hitting? It's been working for him, and I like David Schneider in the leadoff spot because he typically gives a good at bat. He is a guy that can see a lot of pitches, and he's not going to go up there and waste an at bat. So he's typically a guy that you like to see in the leadoff position, and he's handled it before.
It's a good opportunity for him. He has been swinging the bat pretty well. Obviously, he's more of a role player and a bench piece this year, but I think that that could be a good opportunity to get him in the game, especially as you're kind of cycling through guys as George Springer remains out of the lineup. Could be a good opportunity to get him a look at the top of the lineup.
Yeah, I'm going to assume that 789 will be Andres Jimenez, Myles Straw, and then the catcher, whoever it is, again, assuming that Varsha was not in the lineup tomorrow and doesn't feel like he will be. So I suppose he could be, but based on what they've said, doesn't feel like he's that close to playing tomorrow.
for example so let's say we know what the bottom three are and the top three are that middle three like four five six actually you could go any way you want tomorrow right i mean you could have lenny and sosa dh tomorrow he could bat fifth if that's the case who could bat i mean you could see lenny and sosa batting cleanup tomorrow this obviously is with the assumption that jesus sanchez who's not have great splits against lefties it assumes that sanchez just sits to start the game right
So if he does sit, then could you have Okamoto back cleanup? We have seen that this year so far. Could you have Sosa back cleanup? I mean, could you have Eloy Jimenez play the field tomorrow? I think you could, honestly. I don't know. It might not be the best off-field defense you've ever seen, but I mean, you could have that if you really want to. You could go a lot of ways with 4-5-6 tomorrow.
