In the fall of 2016, Anthony DiPippo walked out of court a free man. After decades in prison for the murder of Josette Wright, he'd been found not guilty of all charges in that crime. Second-degree murder, acquitted. First-degree rape, acquitted. It was his third and final trial on those charges. But this was the first Putnam jury to hear the truth. The truth about the criminal misconduct of the cops who'd framed Anthony and his best friend Andy for murder. The truth about the teens those Putnam cops coerced into falsely accusing the two boys. And the truth about the man who should have been their target. The devil in the woods, Howard Gombert. On the day of his acquittal, Anthony felt, well, a dozen different things.
Yes, he'd climbed the mountain and was free to go home now, but home was a place that had demonized him and would never let him know a moment's peace. Andy, meanwhile, was still rotting in prison, would have to fight his own way home. And then there was Gombert. Gombert, you'll recall, was in prison himself, doing a 30-year bid for multiple charges, including sexual assault on seven-year-old Sarah. But for Gombert, the 30 years will only be 27, after which he'll walk out of prison a free man. As I tape these words, that moment is close at hand. In the past few months, the DOC has advanced the date of his release. Currently, he's set to leave prison in January of 27. And when Connecticut cuts him loose, it'll be with no parole.
Meaning Gumber will be free to simply vanish unseen, to go back to that tent in the woods if he likes. And there he'll wait, brooding and seething, till a time and place of his choosing.
