Welcome back. This is episode 510 of the NYYST podcast. I'm your host, Christian, and I hope it's warm wherever you are, although that's probably not in many places here in the United States. It's about 430 on Sunday evening. I actually just woke up from a nice little nap after battling this winter storm earlier in the afternoon. You know, a lot of times these winter storms are a
When I was out there about 1 o'clock-ish, we had probably 8 to 10 inches, and I didn't take my ruler out there, but it felt like a good 8 to 10 inches. on the ground already, and as you're shoveling, it probably dropped another one to two inches as it just kept falling and falling. And it's been pretty much freezing rain since then, which is always amazing.

Chapter 2: How does Cody Bellinger's return impact the Yankees' playoff chances?
I was stunned by the amount Luke Weaver got, but Luke Weaver was a very reliable setup guy and your closer for the majority of his two years here. You lost that. Devin Williams is not a loss to me. Every time I talk about how the Yankees lost the division last year, the first thing everybody wants to bring up is Devin Williams. So that's not a loss to me.
But that whole underbelly of the bullpen, all the depth guys are gone. They non-tendered that whole underbelly of the bullpen with the guys like Ian Hamilton and Mark Leiter Jr. You've got to replace them from somewhere. And you look at the starting rotation now.
Coming into the offseason, I think the Yankees are going to be players in the starting market, and they haven't been players in the starting market. Ryan Weathers is a project, let's be honest, with his injury history, and I think ultimately he'll wind up in the bullpen for the Yankees.
They haven't liked some of the prices on some of the starting pitching, and that's why you've seen guys like Edward Cabrera and Mackenzie Gore, who I didn't really like either one of those two guys, and Freddy Peralta wind up in other places. I think the Yankees should have been in on Freddy Peralta, but let's be honest here.
Freddy Peralta, as much as I want the Yankees to get another starter and they need another starter, Freddy Peralta is a luxury. Would have been a luxury for the Yankees. Adding another starter is a luxury for the New York Yankees. And I'll tell you why. I know some of you are going to disagree with me, and I literally just said I would add another starter.
But it's a luxury for the Yankees to get another starter. You have Max Fried. He's your horse. You know, I know in Atlanta he had some injury history. He threw a lot of innings last year. He had the blister issue pop up. But he's your horse. He's your ace going into the season. Okay? But can he handle the workload back-to-back years? Question mark. But he's there.
You have Garrett Cole coming back hopefully by the beginning point of June, which is already a little bit scary because he had the brace procedure last which gets these guys on the field faster. And he had his Tommy John surgery coming up on about a year now, and he needs additional time.
But hopefully you get Garrett Cole through June, July, August, and by September, October, he's Garrett Cole, he's ready to go. But you're going to be missing Garrett Cole for the first two months on the field and probably two months after that getting him ramped up. So you hope he's healthy by the end of August, but also question mark.
Will Warren, I think, honestly, this is the craziest thing to say. I think Will Warren is the biggest given in this rotation, given where his baseline is, being a fourth or fifth starter, a guy that pitches in a low four ERA, and he's already reached the innings in 2025 that you feel comfortable throwing him out there again in 2026. So you have Will Warren also. You have Luis Gil.

Chapter 3: What are the terms of Cody Bellinger's new contract with the Yankees?
You tell me I'm getting two years? We might have a conversation now. But for one year to rent Tarek Skubal because all you're doing is renting him because he's a Boris guy. And for anybody who thinks that the Yankees are just, oh, it doesn't matter. We'll go out there and get him a free agency next year. Okay. How has that been working for the Yankees and Scott Boras' clients?
The only reason I got this one is because nobody else really wanted him. Insane, though, right? It really is crazy. Two years in a row, there was really no market outside of the Yankees for Cody Bellinger. So I know people saw that, and some people said, dude, you got to do it right now. Yeah, okay. I mean, the Yankees pulled that trade off. It was Schlittler, Lombard, and Rice for school bowl.
Am I coming on here screaming about it? No, I don't think so. I just don't think it's wise for those reasons. Yeah, selling out to win in 2026 means selling my farm. It doesn't mean plucking guys off of my major league roster that I expect to be big contributors in 2026. But it's pretty much a dead issue.
School's not getting traded unless the Tigers are out of it at the deadline, and maybe they move him then. And he's going to free agency anyway as a Scott Boris guy, and I think he's going to command north of $400 million. I think this is one of those rare guys.
You saw where the market was this year, but I think he's one of those rare guys that he's such a supreme talent that there will be multiple bidders out there. There will be multiple bidders with long-term contracts out there for him. And yeah, I know somebody's saying right now, who's going to the Dodgers? Eh, he goes to the Dodgers. And we'll get Paul Skeens.
I know Livvy Dunn posted a picture of Paul sitting next to Aaron Judge at the Writers Award dinner last night. One can dream, right? One can dream. And what I can dream of is you leaving the NYYST podcast a five-star rating review on this very podcast platform that you're listening to us on right now.
