Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. And we're coming to you live from the Build 4 Tough Studio. Boomer Esaias and Greg Giottati. It's Boomer and Geo. On the fans, simulcast across the country on CBS Sports Network. And wherever you are, the free Odyssey app. Good Friday morning. It is a feel-good Friday.
There may be some Catholics out there that say Good Friday can't be a feel-good Friday. And that's what they believe. But here at Boomer and Gio, we are non-denominational. And we have Feel Good Fridays on every single Friday of the year, even when the Mets lose again and look worse than they have the entire year. Last night in San Francisco, David Peterson. Not great. Offense still really bad.
Yes, it's early, but it's just annoying, especially when you come off the last couple of months of the 2025 season where this team was absolutely atrocious. But we've got happiness today out in the Bronx. Yankees opening day. And that's going to be a lot of fun for Yankee fans as their team continues to roll all good vibes around the New York Yankees.
Plenty more to get to throughout the course of the morning. Good morning, Boomer. How are you? Oh, I'm doing great, G. Thank you very much on this good Friday. I would say that as a Met fan, I'm not very happy and rightfully so. As a human being, I'm sick, and I feel worse today than I did yesterday. Yeah. As you can tell.
But, you know, I'm going to power through this because it is opening day for the New York Yankees at 5-1, and they are rolling, man, and they look great. And all I can say to us Met fans is, man, it is early. We got a long way to go, and we are a long way from opening day. When we thought when we came in here the next day, wow, this is going to be some lineup when you see it in –

Chapter 2: Why are Mets fans frustrated with the team's performance?
in real time and what they did and how they fight off pitches. But, you know, David Peterson did not have a good start last night and watched the highlights this morning. Obviously did not stay up and watch the game at all. But it just seems like they just cannot get the key hit. Again, runners in scoring position, oh, for three this time. And they only had five hits in this game.
Yeah, I mean, they get out to a lead, but obviously it doesn't last very long, and you had a combination of David Peterson getting smacked around the park and then sloppiness as well as he makes an error trying to cover first. You got the miscommunication between Luis Robert Jr. and Marcus Simeon that leads to a ball dropping that shouldn't have.
Chapter 3: How did David Peterson perform in his recent game?
So, yeah, it was just a bad one, and it normally wouldn't matter as much if we didn't. See the same things that have befell them the last couple of games, which is bad offense after bad offense after bad offensive game. And also, it was a long offseason. It was a long June, July, August, September last year watching them play terrible baseball.
When you finally get yourself past some of the things maybe you disagreed with in the offseason, even though I didn't disagree with much, and then you come out and that first game, as we talked about, the lineup's long and it feels like this team is disciplined at the plate. Everybody's got the eye of Juan Soto.
To turn that into what we've seen here, which is just absolutely anemic offense, is frustrating. You just hope that it doesn't continue. It's not like the San Francisco Giants are some sort of juggernaut. I mean, it's also annoying that you see the Yankees essentially shut down the Giants like they were a Little League team.
And then when the Mets play them, you know, seven runs in that first game. Yeah, that's a little bit annoying as well. But, of course, I mean, all the old adages continue about April and this and that. It's just that... this is the time you're supposed to be excited about the team and it's supposed to be fired up. Like Yankee fans right now, that's what I want to be feeling.
I want to be feeling that 5-1 feeling going to Yankee Stadium for opening day and seeing this team continue to play well. And instead we got a 3-4 team that was mentally checked out two days ago, is sloppy in the field and can't get a big hit. Sucks. I would also say that a couple of these things are, you know, players have to get used to playing with each other. Yeah.
Whether it be Sibian and Robert and whether – well, you know, Vientos was at first base last night, so much for run prevention in a key situation.

Chapter 4: What are the highlights from the Yankees' home opener?
Sure.
But I don't know. These are all things that are going to have to work themselves out. I just – The fact of the matter is that they should be a much better offensive team than they are showing in the last four games. The last five games, actually, right? I mean, so after that opening day, you know, deluge of hits and walks and all the key hits and everything else, I don't know what to tell you.
I can always say that time will tell whether or not they're going to be any good. And I just... It's frustrating for them to get off a start like this, but I'm not going to just throw in the towel yet. Well, obviously not. We know that. We have such a long way to go. We know that.
By the way, a couple years ago, remember, this was not a great team, and somehow they found the magic in the middle of the summer. Well, yeah. I mean, if you look back to the last two years, you got off to a great start last year, ended terrible. Two years ago, you get off to a terrible start, ended great. So, yeah, of course, we know the marathon that this is.
It's just the annoying nature of it. Especially because it's the beginning, and you felt really good about the team opening day. If the team gets out 10 games over .500, they're playing well, and then they go on a four-game losing streak or a five-game losing streak where they can't hit in June, you're like, oh, okay, I can deal with this a little bit. It's just that...
We've just had multiple games in a row that are annoying losses. And some of the most annoying baseball to watch is when your team is losing and they can't hit. Like, that's really... I mean, it sucks all the time. Like, it was bad last year when the team couldn't pitch. But it's just so annoying. Like, somebody, please, for the love of God. Get the big hit.
It was good to see Mark Vientos hit a bomb last night. I mean, if they ever got consistency out of him and the star power that we saw out of him in the 2024 postseason, I mean, that would really, really transform this lineup in ways that I wouldn't expect because I kind of just... counted him out a little bit, even though I was a huge Mark Vientos guy after that postseason.
I was all about him in 2025, and then it was just a bad year. So, I mean, he crushes one last night in the second inning, so that was good to see. So he's played multiple games in a row, and he looks like he's hitting the baseball. So do you want to take a positive from last night? There's one for you. Looks like 55 degrees and cloudy today at Yankee Stadium for opening pitch.
Could be better, could be worse. Yes, that's true. But you would sign for that in early April, that's for sure, with the weather, how bad it could be. You could get a 42-degree, rainy, 15-mile-an-hour to 20-mile-an-hour sustained wind day, and you're not going to get that.

Chapter 5: What impact did Jack Hughes have during the Yankees' opening day?
I don't know. I don't know if that mic's on or not. All I hear is static in my ear. Right. If it's static, it's from the other side of the glass.
It's not from Jesus.
From the other side of the glass. Okay. Yeah. It's going to be a long day.
Oh, yeah.
He's pissed.
We are limping to the weekend. Yes, we are, man.
I'm just trying to get through the day, you boys. I understand. I do feel like 10% to 20% better.
I mean, you sound better.
Got a new antibiotic yesterday, and it seems to be kicking in. You sound better. Well, thank you. I mean, I'm still coughing in the break. And that things are coming out of my lungs that don't look great. But he's coughing and I'm sneezing. His improvement is canceled out by your decline. Thank you. Appreciate it. Makes me sound, I feel like, kind of sexy. No, no, no. You sound ill.
