More action yesterday with the New York Jets, with the Buffalo Bills as they hire their new head coach, elevating Joe Brady. And we hear that the New York Jets reach out to John Gruden to be a part of Aaron Glenn's staff. Someone's got to explain to me how that went down. Was this the Jets organization? Was this ownership? Was this Darren Muji? Or was this Aaron Glenn's idea?
It's one of the weirder things that I have ever heard, quite frankly, to reach out to John Gruden to just be a part of a staff of a guy who's only been a head coach for a year and had a miserable season. I do like the fact that they are looking at veteran guys to come in and help stabilize this, but this reeks of Aaron Glenn going, I don't know what I'm doing. Somebody come in here and help me.
Wink Martindale, you've done this before. Frank Rack, you've done this before. John Gruden, you've done this before. And I said here yesterday, if I was Tanner Engstrand and I was getting demoted after what they gave me as an offensive coordinator and I would leave the organization, well, he did exactly that. We'll talk some Knicks.
Even though it was a win, it was brutal to watch, and there were some major concerns with this basketball team.

Chapter 2: Who is Jon Gruden and why is he being considered for the Jets' coaching staff?
Good morning, Boomer. How are you?
Yeah, good morning, G. I'm doing all right. And, you know, I think the story yesterday, not only Joe Brady getting a job up there and all the stuff coming out of the Jets facility and all the news and Tanner Engstrom stepping away. He wasn't fired, by the way. He basically did not want to be demoted.
And I don't blame him at all for not wanting to hang around if they are bringing in a new offensive coordinator, which everything is trending towards, and defense coordinator, which everything is trending towards.
Because remember, you know, when these guys get hired, when offensive and defensive coordinators get hired, they don't want to go into a building where they don't have their guys with them teaching their systems. They don't want to call somebody else's defense. They don't want to call somebody else's offense.
They don't want to have to teach a whole group of guys a whole new plan of attack in the way that we go about things. So if it is, let's just use the name John Smith. If John Smith is the coveted defensive coordinator, he's probably telling the Jets, yeah, I would like to take the job, but I need my guys in the building with me coaching what I normally coach.
And let me take a look at the list of coaches that you have on your roster to see whether or not I could work with them or have worked with them somewhere else and if they would understand what I am trying to do.
Because there's nothing worse than a guy like, say, a Jim Leonard who's probably going to go to Buffalo now or a Wink Martindale that would want to come in and all of a sudden say, okay, Aaron, you're going to call the defensive plays, but I'm doing what? I mean, I've been around long enough. This is my chance.
Jim Leonard will never take this job because Jim Leonard's looking to be able to become his own defensive coordinator. He doesn't want to be a bag handler for somebody. Mm-hmm. That's why Joe Brady most likely is going to go get Jim Leonard, and Joe Brady is going to bring in Jim Leonard as defense coordinator in Buffalo. I would think that makes total sense to me.
If Jim Leonard is up for this job here in New York, I guarantee you a lot of people are probably telling him, Don't take it. Don't take it. You're too young.

That I don't know. Because I'm not talking to John Gruden. And I know that Dave Portnoy put it out there. And I know that Connor Hughes has got it out there, which I told you the other day. I really feel like his contacts have been really good. I just... I do not – I just – I don't know. I don't know. I would think the head coach. I would think Aaron Clark.
You think Aaron Clark would be asking about this? Yes, yes. So why would he think that a guy who has all the experience in the world, has won a Super Bowl, is an alpha male, who is a rally-the-troops guy who all he wants to do is be a head coach, asking that guy to come in and be a part of your staff would be a good idea?
One, he knows that he's – it's like, as Dave Portnoy said, it is kind of insulting – For John Gruden to come in and work under Aaron Glenn, who has done a damn thing for one of the worst organizations in football. But other than that, I mean, how?
Dave Portnoy can say all he wants. I'm just telling you, given what John Gruden has been through over the last five years, the chance to get back in the NFL. I don't know if he'll ever have another chance. Who knows? Maybe he will. Maybe his lawsuits will be finalized and things will happen. But I don't know what that would do to his lawsuits. That's the other thing.
You know, he is suing the NFL for wrongful termination because of the emails. So I... To me, when I saw this yesterday, I was pretty much shocked about it because I hadn't heard anything about it. I obviously know that they're talking to different offensive coordinators and different people that would love, not love, but that they're looking for credibility.
With people now, and I don't know, this could be Woody. I mean, you know, the other thing, too, is that, you know, so the previous coaching staff all got wiped out. Now, some of those coaches all got jobs. So, you know, I'm sure that a lot of the money that was associated with the previous coaching staff is probably already gone.

probably has made enough money and his contract probably is up. And so now there may be more money for the assistant coaches for Aaron Glenn. And maybe this was the plan all along. If they didn't do well, that he was going to replace these guys with people that, you know, he knew and, or that, uh, the fans would know and would lend credibility to the coaching staff.
Yeah, I mean, if you're going to take the hit of the PR backlash of bringing John Gruden into your organization, then why didn't you ever talk to him or interview him when the head coaching job was open? So that's why I keep asking because I've got different takes on these things. If this was an Aaron Glenn ask, I have questions about that. It has to be.
If it was a Woody Johnson ask, I'd have questions about that too.
There's no way that Woody Johnson wouldn't. You just said a minute and a half ago, maybe it was Woody. No, but I'm saying there's no way that he's not going into Aaron Glenn and mentioning this to him. I'm not saying that he wouldn't be the guy that would reach out to the agent. I'm not saying that. Or whoever's talking to the agents.
But everything's got to go across the desk of the head coach before any of this stuff goes down the road. So could Woody and Aaron have had a discussion about an offensive coordinator? With Darren Muji in the room, I'm assuming that all three of them are working together. And I'm thinking that they're looking at all of this and everybody's saying, well, this guy is great.
He's got this kind of reputation. This is what he does. This is how he's done it. They look at the resume. John Gruden, you and I have spoken about John Gruden before Aaron Glenn was hired. And we thought that he would be the perfect head coach for the New York Jets just simply because of his bombastic personality. And I do think that Aaron Glenn, by the way, is trying to copy.
I don't want to say copy, but he's being his own man for sure. But he's being aggressive as well. He's being the alpha male, and he has been since he got here. Now, it may not have worked out for him because they lost. You know what I'm saying? I also think that there's probably a business aspect to all of this.
Yeah, but I mean, they're going about it in such a bad way. So I know what you mean. I mean, what way? Here's why. Because Aaron Glenn's talking about the process and this and trust us and all of this. He's fired nine coaches. And by the way, I understand he fired Steve Wilks before the season. So they have a jumpstart on that. But they still haven't hired a defensive coordinator.
And now all these other coaches are assembling their staffs with the 10 openings. And now they've got an offensive coordinator opening at the end of January. That's why I mean they're doing it the wrong way. It just screams desperation.

I really want you to take it. And then John Smith says, well, look, man, again, like I told you earlier, I do not want to deal with the coaches that you have on that staff. I have my own coaches that know how I do things and how I implement things and how I want things taught.
So it makes complete sense to me that if you're going to fire both defense and offensive coordinator and you're going to hire new guys, you've got to let the new guys have the ability to have the coaches that they want around them. And if you want major success, that's the way it's going to be. Because if you want somebody to inherit a group of coaches, guess what? They're not coming.
Well, especially the names that we're talking about here. Guys who have done it before and that are respected. And we're only going to take these jobs if everything is perfect. And there's one thing I will say, even though I think this whole thing is a complete mess right now.

woody johnson in this in this one this one instance okay now i think he's one of the worst owners in the nfl but he seems to not even consider the financial stuff when it comes to trying to fix the team so it's very much like jim dolan was on all the years the knicks were bad he's at every expense that he could possibly throw at the team he's going to do it he's just making bad decisions but once again i mean they you know they fired rob sala they had to pay the rest of that even though it's gonna
offset now.
I think he's probably done. I think his contract's probably done.
But still, they still had to offset it last year. So then there were other coaches prior to that that never finished their contracts. And now, as you mentioned, there's three or four years left on these assistant coaches' contracts that he's gotten rid of.

I can't even remember who the OC was after that. There might be five in four years at this point. Now I'm thinking about it. There's going to be another one. I mean, he signed that deal, and I'm sure he's happy about that, and he's defended the Jets on social media when people go after him. But, I mean, it just feels like it's a road to nowhere with them.
And if I were a star player on the team, I would be like, I got to get out of here if I want to do anything with my career.
There were two-star players that basically did do that, and we found out after the trade of Quinton Williams that he quietly went to the Jets and said he wanted out. Yeah. So we found that out.
I don't think Sauce did because he got his contract. I don't think that he begged to get out, but that's before all of this.
Well, Quinton got his contract, too, and I think Quinton was very happy to be traded to the Cowboys.
Yeah, of course.
Of course. Where they lost anyway. So it doesn't matter. And Sauce Gardner didn't win. Did they win a game after they traded him?
I don't think so. He had the worst individual record in football, I think. He played 18 games? I think he might. I think it was something like 2-16 or something. It was really crazy, the teams he was on.
I'm just telling you, with what I see happening here, I see coordinators that probably have accepted the jobs, and I see them bringing in coaches that they want to coach with that can teach their particular systems, both on offense and defense. That's what I think. So you're saying wink and Frank. That's going to happen. I didn't say that. I can't say that.
