Hour 2 - Debate Over Jalen Hurts, Boomer Defends Fired OC, Giannis Boos Fans

14 Jan 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What sparked the debate between Emmanuel Acho and Kurt Warner over Jalen Hurts?

0.031 - 24.143 Boomer Esiason

It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. All right, Boomer and Geo coming to you live from the Bill Ford Tough Studio on the Fan and CBS Sports Network. Offensive coordinators really get hammered when a team isn't playing well and an offense isn't playing well. It's the first guy to get roasted. And you heard Kevin Petullo throughout the year get roasted.

0

24.163 - 42.883 Boomer Esiason

The fans were throwing eggs at his house. You had a nine-year-old boy say that Kevin Petullo should be flipping burgers at a fast food restaurant. Where do you think that nine-year-old boy is hearing that from? Probably his parents, who are saying worse things, and Eagles fans that just absolutely hate the guy.

0

43.765 - 70.852 Boomer Esiason

So, Kevin Petullo ends up getting fired yesterday, and I was seeing a lot of back-and-forth reports. From football players on X posting tape and video and everybody screaming about Kevin Petullo and the Eagles offense. So, Emmanuel Acho, he's out there and he's showing tape. I can't believe that this is going on and Kevin Petullo, you know, he did this twice and this is unbelievable.

0

71.172 - 75.257 Boomer Esiason

So, who comes in? None other than Hall of Famer Kurt Warner.

0

75.537 - 75.617

Hmm.

76.171 - 98.47 Boomer Esiason

He parachutes in and he quote posts, I don't know what you're looking at, but guys are running wide open. You want to talk about the real problem here? So he's putting it on Jalen Hurts and then, you know, Ocho's going back and then Kurt Warner's doing this whole thing. Listen, I appreciate everybody's opinion, but really all of you are idiots for thinking that it's all on Kevin Petullo.

98.49 - 119.005 Boomer Esiason

Yeah, I remember Kurt. Kurt Warner is not going to get into a name-calling fight with anybody. Yeah. That's not who he is. And he is a Hall of Famer, and he can read defenses just like I can read defenses. What did I tell you after going back and looking at the tape yesterday about Jalen Hurts? So us as quarterbacks, we see it. We see guys open.

119.126 - 136.406 Boomer Esiason

Emmanuel Acho screaming about the fact that they just flipped the formation and ran back-to-back plays at the same place. And Kurt, me, and any other quarterback that looks at that is going to say – Damn, those guys are wide open. Why isn't he throwing it? And that's exactly what the coaches are probably doing when they're sitting in there.

136.907 - 149.502 Boomer Esiason

Or the owner is sitting in there going to the coaches, why isn't he throwing it? Have you told him to throw it there? Is he looking there? Is he not looking there? And when you're in a two-minute offense, a lot of times you will run plays that are redundant.

Chapter 2: Why was Kevin Petullo fired as the Eagles' offensive coordinator?

172.747 - 189.709 Boomer Esiason

And all I can tell you is that, you know, Emmanuel Acho, I think, was a defensive player, right? He was, yeah. Yeah, all right. So we're the quarterbacks. We read defenses. He's the defensive player. And maybe he's looking at it from the aspect that you're making it too easy on us on defense because you're not changing the plays.

0

190.35 - 200.603 Boomer Esiason

We're looking at it from the offensive perspective saying, you know what? Those plays are wide open. He's just got to throw the ball. And we don't know why he's not throwing the ball.

0

200.623 - 221.571 Boomer Esiason

And again, sometimes you have to look at the, instead of looking at the all 22 where you see guys running wide open, sometimes you have to look at the end zone camera because maybe you could see a shorter quarterback has a big, giant offensive lineman in front of him or a defensive lineman's got his hands up and he doesn't want to go that way because he doesn't want the ball to be tipped. Right.

0

221.591 - 240.57 Boomer Esiason

So you never know why the quarterback is not seeing things, but to be screaming and yelling about a play where guys are wide open doesn't do you any favors when it comes to your credibility. So Banjo-Watros says, Kevin Batula was never going to survive doing this and then had this video.

0

241.27 - 261.719 Boomer Esiason

I don't know if anybody did it, but one of the first things I thought of, but I didn't do it, was to quote tweet it and say, well, you were never going to survive at Fox banging your co-host, right? Okay. I mean, I hear you. That's what he was doing. A little stoop fest over there. You're not going to survive doing that. Kurt Warner could have done that.

261.799 - 282.374 Boomer Esiason

Could have said that, but that's not who Kurt is. That's not the guy he is. I'm that guy. That's exactly right. I'm that guy. He's not that guy. Anyway, so Kurt Warner said, doing what? The outside slant was open both times. The 49ers didn't cover it either time. So what's the problem here? I really do respect all these opinions. But what really is the problem? Doesn't matter if it's open.

282.434 - 298.401 Boomer Esiason

Only matters if he's called it two times in the last drive. Let's not complain to complain. Is there an option on each play? Is there an answer for each coverage? If this is so different than other teams in two-minute drill. Yeah, and the other thing, too, is because it's a two-by-two situation in terms of the...

298.381 - 315.316 Boomer Esiason

In terms of the formation, you can go one side or the other side, and that's the way the concepts are built. And for some reason, and sometimes we all get stuck in this as quarterbacks, sometimes you pick the wrong side for whatever reason. You never know what that reason is.

Chapter 3: What does Kurt Warner believe is the real issue with Jalen Hurts' performance?

315.336 - 336.543 Boomer Esiason

Only the player playing knows it. Yeah. If you want to join us, Red Pocket Mobile fan line is brought to you by your new ultimate cell carrier, Red Pocket Mobile. It's 888-808-1019. Another offensive coordinator that was fired. Yesterday was Greg Roman, who was rumored to be on the hot seat there with the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh and the miserable offensive performance they had.

0

336.563 - 358.229 Boomer Esiason

And I know that you have talked about how bad the offensive line was. Oh, my God. I mean, like... It was horrendous. And it was horrendous because they lost their stud tackles. Yeah. It'd be like the Jets losing Membu and Fashino. If you lost both of those guys, you'd be screwed. And that's exactly what happened to the Chargers. And they kept trying to figure it out and fix it.

0

358.809 - 374.102 Boomer Esiason

And you remember, Makai Beckton's in the middle of this whole thing, too. And Makai won a Super Bowl, and he was with a great offensive line. He had a great center. He had a great tackle to his right. And they were able to help him and protect him. There were situations in this game against New England where Makai did nothing.

0

374.369 - 395.998 Boomer Esiason

And the outside tackles just got bum-rushed and rolled over and spun around. And it was literally a turnstile. And poor Justin Herbert was getting his ass kicked. So let's fire the offensive coordinator because we lost half of our offensive line. That's a good idea. Well, wherever John Harbaugh ends up, does Greg Roman go there with him because of the history that those two have in Baltimore?

0

396.238 - 416.428 Boomer Esiason

I would say the most important question that I would have for John Harbaugh if I were the Giants would be, who is your offensive coordinator, and what system is he running? I need to know that. I need to know exactly what you're going to try to do with this quarterback. And how do you see him? Give me a comparison. Well, I'm not giving the comparison now.

416.528 - 429.889 Boomer Esiason

I want John Harbaugh to say all these different things in regards to our offense, our quarterback, how to get the most out of our quarterback, what's the best system for him. Yeah, but they've made up their mind that they want John Harbaugh.

429.909 - 447.648 Boomer Esiason

So, I mean, they're not going to ask him a question about the offensive system and he's going to give them an answer that's going to make them want to hire somebody else. I mean, they are all in on John Harbaugh. What the question is going to be is, I guess, tell us what type of offense that you're envisioning and the offense that we're going to run once you're the head coach.

447.889 - 458.303 Boomer Esiason

I'd be like, you know what, I'm going to try to run the Minnesota offense. I'm going to try to run... the Miami Dolphin offense under Mike McDaniel when it was flying. I'm going to try to run the Shanahan offense, the Clint Kubiak offense.

458.864 - 483.225 Boomer Esiason

I mean, the Clint Kubiak offense seems to be the offense that most quarterbacks can flourish under, and it really does start with the run first, and you are a Northeast team. And I always tell you this, when you run, you know, this is a former offensive lineman yourself. When you are a running football team, first and foremost, that makes your team automatically a physical football team.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of John Harbaugh's potential move to the Giants?

1296.062 - 1312.048 Boomer Esiason

Likes all the noises and the weird stuff that we do here. So I thought that was cool. Big Boomer and Geo fans. All right. He said, what's up? What's up, Steve? Yeah. And what's up, Jared? Brought to you by Chef IQ. Precision cooking. Effortless results. ChefIQ.com. For the first time in a long time, the Steelers...

0

1312.028 - 1333.084 Boomer Esiason

are in search of a head coach, as Mike Tomlin did decide to step down after 19 seasons yesterday. You heard all the fire Tomlin chants the other night when they were losing their playoff game on Monday Night Football. And so he leaves having won 193 games in his 19 seasons, eight playoff wins, one Super Bowl championship.

0

1333.525 - 1348.948 Boomer Esiason

Meantime, you've got the Ravens inside that division, too, like the Browns looking for a head coach. This was John Harbaugh who was let go. And this was Steve Busciotti yesterday with the media. This is a little bit on the longer side, but how he actually made and came to making the decision.

0

1349.389 - 1373.442 Steve Bisciotti

Fell on my instincts and whatever I was feeling was right. I woke up Monday and I was pretty sure that I was going to do it. And I've got great partners here and spent a lot of time with them. and asking them their opinions. And, you know, I made the decision.

0

1373.702 - 1383.861 Boomer Esiason

And then this one, I swear to God, as I'm listening to it, all I could think of is Al making the decision on the dog, which has not been the best decision of his life. Here's Bashadi with a lot of conviction here.

1384.241 - 1403.087 Steve Bisciotti

I got to the point that I didn't... believe that I would feel regret after I made that decision. And that's what instinct is. When you finally get to the point that you're pretty damn sure that you are not going to regret the decision a day or a week later, then that's the time to make the decision.

1403.107 - 1413.062 Boomer Esiason

He regrets every decision he makes. That's right. So pretty funny. He was asked if Lamar Jackson was heavily involved in this or if he had any involvement.

1413.283 - 1423.65 Steve Bisciotti

No, Lamar did not have an outsized... part of my decision. My decision, I think, by Monday was pretty much set.

1423.67 - 1436.308 Boomer Esiason

He said he did talk to him, but it was already a done deal. And then coming back full circle to Tomlin. I played last hour as he was told while talking to the media about Tomlin leaving the Steelers. He also went a little further.

Chapter 5: What did Steve Bisciotti say about firing John Harbaugh?

1999.762 - 2023.157 Boomer Esiason

Okay. I mean, if you're going to be the number two or three overall pick... Isn't that something you want to do? No, I would think so. I mean, everybody has their opinions about it. I mean, you've got to get to meet the kids. You've got to sit down with them. You've got to listen to what he's got to say. They can't blow this one. Let's put it that way.

0

2023.478 - 2048.08 Boomer Esiason

The Jets have blown too many of these high picks with quarterbacks, either not giving them a chance to develop, putting them in the lineup too early. I mean, they got to make sure that this kid is the right kid. I feel like a lot of GMs convince themselves that a quarterback can be the franchise changer because of what it means to the team and roster building and everything else.

0

2048.16 - 2065.382 Boomer Esiason

I feel like the Jets convince themselves of Zach Wilson. The Vikings convince themselves of J.J. McCarthy. There's just situations where you see talent or you see whatever it is, and you're like, man, we can make this kid into something special, and then that ends up being the pick that sinks you in the end.

0

Chapter 6: What are the challenges of coaching in the NFL as discussed in this episode?

2065.548 - 2086.529 Boomer Esiason

Every general manager either survives or dies based on the quarterbacks that they select in the draft. Let's go to... Well, at least the Jets signed Bailey Zappi. Oh, yeah. Want to talk about an offseason, exciting offseason. We got the Marist, Court, and John Harbaugh. We got Bailey Zappi to the Jets. Hirsch and Valley Stream. What's going on, Hirsch?

0

2087.91 - 2106.783 Boomer Esiason

When you guys get into the studio in the morning, do you guys grab the mic with your left hand or your right hand to start out with? Left, actually, believe it or not, because that's where the microphone is on the left side. Goodness gracious. Yeah. I don't know what your take is on this. I understand it was time for Tomlin to leave Pittsburgh. I get all that. He's going to take a year off.

0

2106.803 - 2126.081 Boomer Esiason

And I don't know what kind of compensation it would take for him to get to the Giants. But if you're Mike Tomlin, do you not at least consider having your people reach out to the Giants? Because the truth is, how often are you going to get into a new coaching opportunity where where you have a QB, you have a running back, you have a wideout, you have a defense, you're in New York.

0

2126.101 - 2148.323 Boomer Esiason

This is not a typical rebuild, guys. Do you think that Tomlin should at least put a feeler out to the Giants and vice versa? Well, so what are you willing to give up to the Pittsburgh Steelers in order to get Mike Tomlin as your head coach? Like, well, you have to compensate them with some sort of draft picks or whatever. Yeah, I would.

0

2148.603 - 2170.859 Boomer Esiason

Because you have the defense in place, you have the back, the wideout, and the QB, if it takes some compensation that's not absolutely ridiculous, the coach is the next step. Ultimately, whatever compensation you have to give within reason, you have to consider it at this point. I don't understand why they wouldn't. Yeah, so both John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski are clear. They're clean.

2171.039 - 2193.126 Boomer Esiason

In other words, you don't have to give up anything. You get them, you keep all your draft picks, and away you go. I still think John Harbaugh or Kevin Stefanski are perfect fits just simply because now all of a sudden you would have to give compensation to the Steelers if you want Mike Tomlin. And again, by the way, we do not know whether or not Mike Tomlin wants to coach this year.

2193.106 - 2211.167 Boomer Esiason

And everything that has kind of happened here towards the end of the season, even the Matt LaFleur stuff coming out of Green Bay, was somewhat accurate. Yeah. It was somewhat accurate because after they lost to the Bears, there was a little bit of a delay time there, and then all of a sudden we heard we're working on an extension.

2211.588 - 2226.09 Boomer Esiason

So Mike Tomlin may not want to coach, but if John Harbaugh goes to the Tennessee Titans and the Giants are sitting there holding the bag and they say, Hey, Mike. What is it going to take for you to get here? And then he says, okay, work out a trade with the Steelers. I'd like the job. Maybe that's something.

2226.431 - 2252.088 Boomer Esiason

But just for context, Sean Payton, the Sean Payton trade from the Saints to the Broncos where Payton walked away but was still under contract or still the rights were still held by the New Orleans Saints. The Broncos had to trade their 2023 first round pick, which was number 29 overall, and a 2024 second round pick. And they also got back a third round pick in 2024.
