Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. Hi, Boomer and Geo coming to you live from the Build 4 Tough studio on this feel-good football Friday on the Fan and CBS Sports Network. Of course, divisional playoff weekend. We will talk more about that, give you our picks coming up in the 9 o'clock hour.
But some of the details about the courting of John Harbaugh were coming out yesterday, and it was fun to read. I couldn't get enough. And I guess there's this Mediterranean restaurant in East Rutherford where Giants lore has been born. And they brought other people there to try to close deals. And Mike McCarthy actually had dinner there. And Pat Shermer, when he got the deal, had dinner there.
But this was a bigger one. And they called up the owner and said, we need that table. And they were going to go off the menu. And, you know, what do you want? Does he want, like, a meat? Or does he want a fish? This whole thing. And they were able to close the deal. And Ian O'Connor put this out there that the Giants and John Harbaugh didn't get far away from each other at all in this process.
And John Harbaugh was zeroing in on the Giants almost as much as the Giants were zeroing in on him. And Chris Mara told Ian O'Connor, And this was after everything was done.

I guess Ian had sent a message to Chris Mara along the lines of, hey, if Green Bay opens up, I think that he's probably going to go to Green Bay. And Chris Mara wrote back, well, I wouldn't bet on that. And he knew then that he had had him. And it was just so much fun to listen to that because... We knew how much the Giants wanted him. But to hear how passionate that John Harbaugh was about taking this job makes it even more special. So excited for that press conference that will happen at some point next week. Yeah. The big winner out of all this, in my eyes, right now, as we sit here, is Chris Mayer.
Now, there was a great article that was written about John Mara being a part of all these interviews because he is the steward of the franchise and has been and loves the team and cares as much as the fans do. And I know it's hard to hear somebody say that about a billionaire owner because there's always the argument. that the billionaire owners don't care.
Believe me, they are highly competitive. They want to win. They don't want to lose. And when they hold up that Super Bowl trophy, man, that is like the crowning achievement as an owner. And now you are the cock of the walk.
You know what I'm saying?
You are the man. And so the fact that he was able to move some of his treatments around and be a part of all of this, and I think that had to leave an impression on John Harbaugh. That had to. And then the other winner, because of all of this situation, to me, is Chris Mara. Going down there and talking to John Harbaugh and having lunch with him before all of this started.
As soon as he could get down there and get it done, he got it done. And I'm assuming, and I don't know, I don't want to – I'm just assuming Chris is going to be taking a much more active role in really being a part of this team. I know that he's pretty close with the Tisch family, and I think there's a really good relationship there.
And to me, the aggressive nature of him going down and selling John Harbaugh on the Giants – I feel like that is a big part of this that probably isn't really being told. Yeah. I mean, I think it is to a certain degree, but you know, a lot of the other things are getting in the way of that. But yeah, I mean, Chris was a huge part of this and Joe Shane doing what he did in this process.
Also something that was very important. And Joe Shane at that dinner and that picture that was out there has now become iconic. And people will look back at that. If the giants and John Harbaugh win a Superbowl together. But yeah. And, and if, Chris Mara or when Chris Mara... First time a coach ever does that. What's that? Two different places, yeah.

So now we have to see who is next. I mean, the Giants getting this done first is great. But who is the next most coveted guy out there? Do franchises look at Chris Shula, Jesse Minter as the next generation of the great head coach? Or do they look like, well, we can go get Kevin Stefanski, put him in a great situation and not be...
They're with Jimmy Haslam and the Browns, and this guy's going to be great. I just wonder who the next guy off the board's going to be. Clint or Clay Kubiak, one of those two guys? Sure. I think Clint is looked at more as— But Clay's now starting to get some traction. Sure. Yep. Maybe one of those two guys.
Again, I still think, when I think of these four playoff games, think about where they're being played. and what you have to have. You have to have a running game. You have to have a physical, nasty offensive line, and every single one of these teams tries to accomplish it in different ways, but when I think of the Broncos and I think of the Seattle Seahawks, that's what I think of.
Same thing with the Patriots. The Patriots have a two-headed running game that is as good as there is in the NFL, and it's a smash-mouth football game. And I'm sure that Mike Frabel's up there telling his team, you better buckle up your chin strap and you better get ready to go against this defense. Because I think that's going to be the hardest hitting game.
But when you think about where these games are all being played, all outdoors, there's going to be inclement weather at the Bears. There may be some snow flurries at the Patriots. The Seahawks, you never know. It could be rain. It could be a nice day. And it sounds like it's going to be a decent day for the Broncos and the Bills. But it's still going to be cold. You still have to run the ball.
Yeah, that's right. We talk so much about these high-flying offenses and getting the ball down the field and air yards and big points and wide receivers, but the basis of a lot of these teams, if not all these teams, is establishing the run. It's old-school, hard-nosed, slobber-knocker football, man. You get excited when you start seeing this because you've got Josh Allen.
You know, you got Bo Nix, you got Brock Purdy, you got Sam Darnold. I mean, you think about the quarterbacks that are playing here. I mean, Drake May. I mean, he's young stars that are coming into the league, and now all of a sudden they're in the playoffs already in their second year. Caleb Williams. I mean, that's amazing. Then you get the Matthew Staffords and the Josh Allens. Yeah.
That are right in the middle. Well, Josh is right in the middle of his career, and Matthews probably could probably play for another three years, but if you wanted to. But think about that. Yeah, I'm thinking about it, thinking that hopefully next year we're saying Jackson Dart is one of those young quarterbacks that is in the playoffs. That's what I'm thinking about.
How about Josh Allen's playoff performance? First quarterback in playoff history with zero turnovers in six straight starts. And in those starts, he's totaled 16 touchdowns and zero turnovers. That's amazing. Yeah, he is everything for that team. Absolutely everything.
