Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. Hi, Boomer and Geo coming to you live from the Build Forward Tough studio on the Fan and CBS Sports Network. Red Pocket Mobile fan line brought to you by your new ultimate cell carrier, Red Pocket Mobile. Give the show a call at 888-808-1019. It is a feel-good Friday, especially how these baseball teams started out.
And yesterday at Citi Field was about as good as it gets. And then you get a break, and then you get Gary Keith and Ron back on SNY, the voices of your spring, summer days. And hopefully deep into the fall, but even though they have to stop at the regular season, we understand that.
But hopefully we hear these guys calling meaningful games in September and Howie being able to call a clinching game deep into September, whether it's the division or a wild card or whatever, and get some playoffs in there was great to hear. a final opening day, put it in the books from Howie yesterday, as I was actually in the car when the game ended, so I was able to hear that.
But I know that it is overreaction every time that we're going to watch these teams in the first couple of weeks, and then we'll say, well, you know, sample size this, sample size that. But when the team makes as many changes as they did,
and the hitting coaches change, and the pitching coaches change, and the bench coaches change, and the type of players that are on the roster, in the lineup, their approach at the plate, and they do what they did, which took a ton of walks, fouled off a ton of pitches, were relentless, and put up that many runs. That is encouraging. That is not only encouraging, it's more than expected.
I think we expected some of that, but yesterday it came in bunches. Like I said, the bottom of the order, and it came from a bunch of guys, whether it be Greg Beatty or Carson Bench. You keep doing the Greg Batey. I keep saying, I'm sorry.

Chapter 2: What encouraging signs did the Mets show in their recent game?
Is it Greg Brady?
I'll say Greg Brady. That's why I keep saying that. So I'm sorry about that. It's okay. I got to break that habit. It's all right. All right. So anyway, Batey, Francisco, Alvarez, those guys are going to be put in situations where yesterday they came through. Thankfully, O'Neal Cruz came through for Batey in the first inning. Yeah.
He hit the crap out of that ball, but he should have been caught by a real center fielder. And he also came through for Marcus Simeon, too. Yeah, and five new guys in the lineup. Five guys all had RBIs, and they take nine or ten walks yesterday, as you were saying. Was it 11? 11, maybe. I'm not sure. And by the way, the Met pitching didn't give up any base on balls, I don't think.
They did give up a few home runs, and that was a little bit. The other thing, too, is the bottom of the eighth inning, remember Carson Bench gets on and he steals second. And Leiter, they're talking about it a little bit in the booth, and they're wondering, like, you know, is that appropriate to do and everything?
And I guess I don't know who was the guy that basically said, you know, everybody's playing as if they're playing in Colorado nowadays. Yeah. And you steal bases because you can't take anything for granted, even with an 11-5 lead at that point. Cool. Especially with what happened in the top of the ninth inning. The Pirates start putting guys on base. They hit a home run. They add two runs.
I was thinking back to the bottom of the ninth inning. The reason that Ben stole second base was, number one, they weren't paying attention to him. Number two, it was two outs. And he was trying to get into scoring position just in case. And why not? Why not is right. That, to me, is in no way piling on. I mean, this is a rookie who's playing the game.
But, again, they were talking about it, saying now everybody's playing as if they're playing in Colorado because no lead is safe in Colorado. Yeah, I mean, in the way that bullpens are in Major League Baseball these days, what we saw out of the Mets last year where they're pitching dying on the vine in front of us, put up as many runs as humanly possible.
Because what I thought initially when he stole second, I'm like, are they going to throw at – Him on Saturday. Yeah. And hopefully that's not going to be the case, but it shouldn't be the case because Pittsburgh didn't give up. They didn't say, hey, look, game's over. They came up in the top of the ninth and tried to win the game. So we're talking about the Mets bullpen. Yes.
How many teams do you think Luis Garcia has been on since 2023? When he's ready, three years, five teams. All right, let's count them here. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Eight. Well, there's a reason for that, and there's a reason why he was in yesterday's game. Yeah, well, hopefully he's great for us. Throw strikes. Yep. Get us out, put the ball in play, that kind of thing.

Chapter 3: What role did O'Neal Cruz play in the Mets' victory?
It's not Balloon Knot Premium, but it's the middle tier Balloon Knot Plus. Well, yeah, of course. Yes, yes, yes, of course. Yes, that's right. So regular Balloon Knot, you got to watch the commercials. Let me ask you a question. Al, you would know this answer. How many plus channels or services are there? You question your answers to make sure. Not the actual streets, but the plus ones.
There's Disney Plus. Yeah. There's Paramount Plus. Right. There was, I don't know if it's still in existence, Discovery Plus. There's ESPN Plus. ESPN Plus. Plus. Plus. There's New York Post Plus. New York Post Plus. That's a good one. Plus is one of those things you keep saying. It sounds weirder and weirder when you say it. What other pluses are there? Can you think of any more? I can't.
Apple TV+. Yeah, there you go. Apple TV+. That's a good one. How about you, Anthony? You got one? Showtime+, maybe? Showtime. Showtime isn't even around anymore? Isn't that under Paramount? Yeah, I don't know if Showtime even exists. It exists under Paramount. Under Paramount+. All right.
It's Paramount+. Under Paramount+.
Yeah. All right. What are you doing this weekend, Anthony?
I had a great weekend. No, no, no. What are you doing this weekend? What are you doing?
Yeah, nothing. Not too much. I'm just getting over the flu. So I'm kind of taking it easy. Yeah, it was a rough one. How long did you have that for? Pretty much seven days, pretty much. Damn, damn. I feel like you're a high-risk guy, too. Well, I did go to a big gathering for St.
Patrick's Day. And I'm assuming it was possibly because of that.
Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm happy to hear that you're back and you didn't die. You seem like a secondary issue guy, yeah. Yeah, I love what he's trying to hang up on us. We don't let him. No, don't hang up. No, just hang around for a little bit. I'll stick around. What else? What do they call that? Not the comorbidity guy. Yeah, comorbidity guy. You're a comorbidity guy. Are you a comorbidity guy?

Chapter 4: What confusion surrounds the Yankees' broadcast options?
First pitch, fastball hit high in the air to center, not too deep. In comes Cruz shading his eyes. He can't come up with it. It falls in front of him or to his left. Coming in to score is Beatty. Digging for a second is Simeon, and he's in with a misplayed double, and the Mets have a 5-2 lead. Hi, I'm Howie Rose. What he did here, he ended up on second. Yeah, he ran hard all the way.
So as I tell you, he ran right out of the box hard all the way and got to second base. Some guys do, some guys don't, and he is one that does, and it turned out to be good for the Mets. They went 11-7, a five-run first inning.
And then even when Pittsburgh was trying to get closer and closer, the Mets then exploded late with a couple of back-to-back home runs from the rookie Carson Benj and Francisco Alvarez. and they win the damn game. First with Cruz, this was through a translator in the Pirates' clubhouse.
So you also had the Brett Beatty hit where he came in, then had to go back, turns into a big bases-clearing triple. Through the translator, what happened out in center field in that first inning? Just the sun was right in front of my face. Obviously, we don't want those stuff to happen, those things to happen, but it was really uncomfortable to have the sun right in front of my face.
I was trying my best, but it was kind of tough. they were really trying to move the sun behind his face. You know what? He, um, he's not wearing glasses. He's got nothing going on. I mean, you know, he worked all off season with, uh, remember Kevin Kiermaier?
Yeah.
It was a great center fielder for the raise. Right. So he worked with him all season long off season. So I make sure stuff like this doesn't happen. And I don't know, it was a bright day. And I know that outfielders sometimes have problems with that, but that these are two plays that you got to make. Oh yeah. It's, It's the Major Leagues!
The one-off Simeon's bat honestly looks like a play you would see on a Little League field. Yeah, definitely. That's why I said this is wild. This is going to be known as the O'Neal-Cruz game. And a season opening win. Here was Beau Bichette in his Mets debut. Really liked what the team did offensively.
We mentioned Beatty and Benj and Alvarez, Luis Robert a couple of hits, Juan Soto a couple of hits.

Chapter 5: What health message was shared through a personal story?
He's five of seven from three. Now that was Mike Breen with the call on MSG. That's Miles Bridges he's talking about, not the Knicks. Mikael Bridges, 114-103 was the final. Miles had 17 points. Con Canepa had 26-11-8. He was 9-14 shooting. LaMelo Ball, 22. Here was Mike Brown. We were terrible on the boards as Charlotte kind of owned them on the glass.
We got stops and they got offensive rebounds. That happened. We contested. Flew by him and stopped and watched. And the ball bounced right back to the shooter. Stopped and watched. Not a good thing to say. I actually thought this game was pretty physical last night. And they let him play, which was good. I like it. And how about Con Canepo?
I mean, he's going to be the rookie of the year in the NBA. He's pretty damn good. 20 years old. Pretty good. Yeah, he was a teammate of Cooper Flagg. Yep. At North Carolina. Nick's now 48-26 on the season. The Nets in L.A. to take on the Lakers tonight. Well, that's in North Carolina, though. All right, Mike. My bad. My bad. That was funny.
Purdue beat Texas 79-77 as the NCAA tournament picked back up with the Sweet 16. Trey Kaufman ran 20 points, had the game-winning tip-in with .7 to go. Braden Smith, so Smith is the one that drove the ball and missed the layup. Smith thought when it left his hands, game winner, but that was not the case.
We drew up the play for me to get to my right hand and to go get a shot. Obviously, my job is to not get it blocked, to get it up there on the rim for that possibly to happen or for the ball to go in. Honestly, it left the hand, and I thought it was in.
Except it wasn't, and it was Kaufman-Wren to the rescue.
It bounced off, missed, and I saw Trey tip it, and I was right under the rim, and I was just like, what? Thank God that went in because I was like, I did not want to go into overtime. I did not want to do that just because of the momentum and all that stuff. And so they didn't have to.
What's amazing to me is that there wasn't a foul called on the tip-in because he goes over the back of the Texas player. Amazing what they let go at different parts of. If you watch, he pushes the Texas player under the basket and then jumps over his back. How is that not a foul? Because it's the end of a game in the Sweet 16. If this happens any other time, it's a foul.
And I don't know how egregious that is either. Look at that. Who's also grabbing him underneath his arm, too. What do you want, everything? I mean, I'm glad they didn't call it. Be physical in that situation. Be physical, man. Purdue will play Arizona next. Arizona beat Arkansas 109-88. Iowa over Nebraska 77-71, 20 for Bennett starts.
