Hour 4 - Darnold Make Super Bowl Before His Class, Boomer & Morash Battle It Out
26 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. Hi, Boomer and Geo coming to you live from the Build Forward Tough studio on the Fan and CBS Sports Network. Red Pocket Mobile line is open, brought to you by your new ultimate cell carrier, Red Pocket Mobile, 888-808-1019. We'll get some calls in this segment. You got the Seahawks and the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Everybody wants that new offensive mind, right? That young offensive mind. Well, you got... Two defensive coaches in the Super Bowl with Mike McDonald of the Seahawks and Mike Vrabel with the New England Patriots. And this is the first Super Bowl matchup since 1981. And that was the 49ers and the Bengals the first time around when Kenny Anderson was the quarterback.
Between two teams who had preseason Super Bowl odds of 50-1 or longer. So not a lot of people thought that these two teams would be in the Super Bowl when the season started. Yeah. I mean, I thought that the Patriots would make the playoffs just simply because of the strength of their schedule. And it turned out to be the weakest in the NFL.
And then, of course, they caught some breaks here playing Stidham in the AFC Championship game, and that turned out to hurt Denver. If we would be sitting here this morning with a Denver helmet in front of us, if Bo Nix was playing, I wouldn't be shocked. That's how close that game was yesterday. No, of course. I mean, it was just a huge mistake there, obviously, with the backwards pass.
Chapter 2: What teams are competing in the Super Bowl and why is it significant?
It changed everything because the Broncos had all the momentum in that game and obviously could have had that 10-point lead, which would have changed the outcome too, but instead they end up going for it on fourth down and not getting it, and that's really when the Patriots became alive. As live as they could, they only scored three points on offense.
But you think about a blocked field goal that would have went through, that would have tied the game at 10. You're talking about another missed field goal at the end of the first half by both teams. This kicking was impossible in this game. And then, you know, the Patriots basically said in the third quarter, we're not even going to attempt to throw any more passes.
We're just going to run it the rest of the way. Ended up being the right thing to do. Yeah, because I think the coaching staff, I bet you Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniel said, look, you know, as long as we don't turn it over, we're not going to lose this game. It's going to be tight, but we're not going to lose the game. Yeah, couldn't kick, couldn't throw, couldn't do anything.
I mean, it was, you know, Sean Payton's got to be kicking himself, and he asked for not kicking that field goal at the beginning of that game to get up 10-0. I mean, that game was going to be tight. You're playing with a backup quarterback. These coaches, they tend to be more aggressive now than ever before. The last five years, we've seen a lot of this.
It's amazing how many of the older football fan will say, you know, can we just take a field goal? It's okay to take a field goal, especially when you're sitting there with a backup quarterback. You're at home, and your defense is playing their ass off.
Yeah, and that's why I really loved the Broncos in this game was the home field, the fact that Drake May had not had a situation like this in his pro career, well, even anywhere in his career. And I really thought that they were going to be able to run the ball a little bit better than they did Denver. But once that snow started, it was over.
I mean, it was a tough enough task for Jared Stidham to begin with and then to have those conditions. He couldn't do a damn thing, couldn't get the ball down the field. At all? Remember, I asked you this this morning.

Chapter 3: What were the preseason odds for the Super Bowl teams?
I want to see if you remembered. Sam Darnold is one of three quarterbacks to have played for either five or more teams to make it to the Super Bowl. One of three quarterbacks to play for at least five teams. What years were the other ones? All right, so the other ones, if you remember, 1968. And then 1998. I do remember. I remember who they were. Let's see if Eddie can get it.
So the two other quarterbacks to make it to the Super Bowl having played for five teams or more other than Sam Darnold. Earl Murrell. Yeah. That's 1968. 1968.
Very good.
And then 1998. If you want a hint, let me know. 98 season, not 98 Super Bowl. It was January or February of 99. What Super Bowl number was it? Do you know? I don't. It had to do with this guy's run to the Super Bowl. Was it 44? No. No, it couldn't have been. It had to be way earlier than that. I mean, 34. It could have been. 33, 34, somewhere around there. It was the worst loss of my lifetime.
It had to do with this guy. He was on the other team. Made it to the Super Bowl. Kicker missed a field goal. Hadn't missed a kick all year. Chris Chandler of the Atlanta Falcons is the answer to the 1998 one. I was not getting that. Yep. Won't forget that. I thought the worst loss was the 39-whatever. 41-nothing, no. Worst one was the 98 teams. They were 15-1.
They were double-digit favorites at home in the championship game.

Chapter 4: How did the Patriots overcome their challenges in the playoffs?
And the Dirty Bird. And the Dirty Bird and a 37-yard field goal to kick them into the Super Bowl with a kicker who had never missed. He didn't miss a kick in the regular season. The first kicker to ever do that in the history of the game. Yeah, that team. Yeah. It was the Dan Reeves, Jamal Anderson. And that was in a dome. Yeah, exactly. Home dome.
It wasn't like you were kicking in a blizzard yesterday. God. Yeah. Let's go to Scott in Amityville. What's going on, Scott? Hey, what's going on, guys?
Good morning. Hey, man. What's happening, Scotty? I hope you guys did okay. It was still fun games yesterday. I think Sean Payton's an idiot for not kicking a field all day. But quick, fun point about Sam Darnold. Dan Darnold has now made the Super Bowl before Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, or even Josh Rosen out of that whole draft class.
He's now the second number one pick from a New York team in that draft to go to a Super Bowl with another team and could actually be the second person to win one. Unbelievable.
It is crazy. You think Saquon Barkley, drafted second in that draft to the Giants, wins a Super Bowl with the Eagles. Sam Darnold, drafted third in that draft to the Jets, is going to the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks and is the favorite in the Super And by the way, the thing is that Sam and Saquon, well, Sam played great last year for the Vikings.
I mean, he had a couple bad games at the end, but he played great for the Vikings, got them the 14 wins, gets the Seahawks the 14 wins. I mean, he's had an incredible two-year run, even though the offseason was probably not great for him because of the way last year ended. But he has bounced back. And I got to give John Schneider a lot of credit.
You know, he's the architect out there in Seattle and has been running that franchise ever since Pete Carroll got there. And he's got the Midas touch. You know, he's got him back in the Super Bowl, much like, you know, Rob Kraft has the Patriots back in the Super Bowl. So to Doc in Philly, what's going on, Doc?
Yeah, I have a question for you guys. I was just curious, how come the Rams didn't go for two? Twice. Could have done it twice. Yeah, especially with like eight minutes left when you knew they weren't going to kick a field goal later on.
Yeah, they could have gone to two, and if they would have made it, then it would have been 31-28 as opposed to 31-27. If they didn't make it, then they're down by five, so it didn't really matter. Yeah, but it was the third quarter, you know? Yeah, I know. And the teams, I mean, it was 31-27. After three, you would think that there would be more scoring going on. Yep.

Chapter 5: What unique record does Sam Darnold hold among quarterbacks?
I saw Flegelman was here today. So did they have to bring in an extra board up? Connor Green.
Yeah, they had to pay somebody extra.
Oh, so they're paying somebody extra in addition. Okay. Schedule that, he's back. Wow, there he is.
Roar.
Yes. So you were saying? Yeah, but they're projecting these models now. You know how we're into the models.
Oh, you love doom and gloom.
They're talking about a potential Nor'easter next weekend. Oh, come on. I just want you to know, it's potential. You know how these weather people are. You see all the memes on Twitter. Social media and everything. I just wanted to make sure that you guys are aware. Well, this is what I was just sent. Oh, so it got sent to you, huh? Yeah.
So it says, if this happens, we are talking feet of snow for Saturday night into Sunday. The problem is when you're in the bullseye six days out, it usually means it isn't happening. Okay. But we'll see. This is the Euro, and it does well with nor'easters. But if you look at the ensembles in the second picture... There's a whole bunch of weather things.
So they're saying that if this happens, feed us snow, but they're saying unlikely at this moment. That's what we got. Just be prepared. I can't be more prepared, man. I'm telling you. For God's sakes. All right? I'm effort prepared. Okay. What else do you want from me? No, I'm just... Took everything. Everything's fine. We're good. So I'm just glad those guys are safe. They're safe.

Chapter 6: How has Sam Darnold's performance impacted his career trajectory?
Okay.
Now, by the way, me, as I'm sitting here, last week said, if you need to stay home to be safe, then stay home and be safe. That's what I said. When Jerry sent the text last night, what did I respond?
You said, be smart, stay safe.
What do you want me to do?
But if he wasn't, the only thing that wasn't tagged on that was Wolf's Boy. Well, yeah.
I mean, be fair. If one of us didn't show up today and did the show from home, regardless of what you had said in a text message or whatever, you probably would have looked at them differently. I think that you guys have this notion. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yes, you do. No. Yes, you do. Wrong. Wrong.
I mean, just go back and hear how you reacted to the midday guys not coming in. Well, I didn't bring it up. I didn't even know about it until Al brought it up. And then Eddie was the one that basically just laid the hammer down. I mean, regardless of who told you. You and I rode in a bike tour in a driving rainstorm. Yes. And we were not quitting. No. Yeah. Same thing.
I don't know if it is.
Yes, it is. No, it's not. That was a choice that we had. We got through it. You had a choice to stay home, but you didn't want to. You wanted to come in. Mama didn't raise a wuss. I mean, I did want to come in, yes, because I hate the way the show sounds. We're in different places.

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the weather conditions on the show?
Oh, baby. As you go back to Friday, though, when the sanitation worker did call in, and he did make it very clear, let us do our job and stay off the roads. Now, again, I don't necessarily think this morning or overnight, but had this been yesterday morning, I agree with him. Those guys got to do what they got to do.
Yeah, I took it so seriously, I haven't been home since Friday at 4 o'clock. What are you doing next week's Nor'easter hits? No, no, no, it's not happening. I'll be in Southern California. Are you on the road next week? Yeah. Good for you. Yeah. When do you leave? Friday. Oh, God. That's the Islander game, too. The WFN Islander game.
Yeah. Friday night or Saturday? Saturday. Saturday.
Yeah. Well, maybe it gets rescheduled. I can go next time. We are getting our asses kicked, man, this winter. La Nina. All right. Anyway. Yeah.
I'll tell you for a moment of the day. Go back on the Odyssey app. Rewind. Check out 750 to 8. It's Greg's terrible, awful, just brutal weekend. Spent a lot of time editing that, too. But anyway, go back on the Odyssey app and check it out. The Patriots also won. So Patriots, Seahawks in the Super Bowl. The Nets lost again. Knicks are off again tonight, though. The Rangers play.
The Islanders play. And I don't think there's any local college. But at least St. John's is still off.
the weekend it's the boomer and geo podcast from wfan hi boomer and geo on the fan and cbs sports network I'm excited for the Mike McCarthy press conference because that's going to be very, very Pittsburgh.
He's going to talk about growing up there and all that stuff and how important it is to him and that Yinzer accident is going to come out and maybe all these Steeler fans that hate the hire because most of them do. I mean, I could not believe the negative reaction to Mike McCarthy.
Maybe that'll turn him around a little bit with all that local stuff because they are very, very into that city and it's a very provincial place. You get Mike McCarthy up there talking about... Pittsburgh. Been here my whole life. Grew up here, crafted Pittsburgh. All that stuff. Give me your sense of whether or not Aaron Rodgers would be back with him. What are the chances of that?
