What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Nobody's paying to save the world. I
think I agree with that statement. I mean Superman's unpaid, right? So Superman is unpaid, that's right. Th there there is an extent to which you can rely on volunteers. At some point, Superman is like, What am I doing this for? I have a day job. Who pays my bills? Who pays my l my line? If if even Superman needs to to to you know pay bills, think of all your other entrepreneurs and stuff. Say, you know, as much as I love this green messaging, this green mission, I need to find something that pays.

Hey Jeremy, nice to be back and in person. Excited to have you back because congratulations, you just announced your fundraise. Uh so what was the size, what was the quantum details?
Yeah, we will raise um about US four point two million led by investors at One Ventures, a US based uh climate focused fund. Uh and also co led by Chancellor Heal Ventures, um, sustainable green infrastructure fund. Uh and of course our investor lead investor from the the last round, Forged Ventures, also participated.
Yeah, I mean I think uh you know Tian was on a previous episode uh twice as well, um, on the episode and uh I think he said good things about you as well. So I think it's fantastic that, you know, you're off to the races. So I think for those who don't know, can you explain very quickly who you are and also what prefers?
Yeah, so I'm DJ, uh co-founder and CETO of Prefer. So I graduated with a degree in chemistry from uh UCL on ASR scholarship. I'm on graduation, came back to Singapore, worked in research, started my career in organic chemistry, moved forward to create flavors and fragrances from fermentation. Uh along the way I got a bit uh you know jaded board of research, started my own consulting gig uh and there I was working with Mr. Restaurants, cocktail bars in Singapore, helped them develop fermentation-based recipes, flavours, techniques. Went back to A Star because they were calling me back to serve my bond. Worked in creating serum-free media for cultivated meat. And that really got me back to the food tech startup space.
And about almost exactly three years ago, I co-founded Prefer with my co-founder and C
So obviously lots of stories to be had um and lots of changes. So obviously we're not gonna recap everything. I think episode four hundred sixty six sixty is the one to watch. So he talks about you in A Star, growing kombucha and kimchi and all these other stuff. So lots of good stuff there. But I'm I'm sure I'm interested because I think over the past three years you've really changed a lot, both as a company but also as a person. And I think we really want to get into that because myself And a lot of people are always curious about the changes and the learnings that you had along the way, right? So, you know, I I guess maybe we'll start with the company, right? Could you share a little bit more about when Prefer was founded, you know, at the earliest of the days with Jake, what was that, you know, product market fit thesis versus today and how that is similar and how that is different?
Yeah. So I I think very broadly it's still the same company. Fir was co founded in twenty twenty two. We started out on on a mission to make coffee without coffee beans. Today if you look at the press release that we put out from the fundraiser uh fundraiser announcement, we look at uh our website. We don't just do coffee, we also do chocolates. And I think that's really the the big hairy audacious goal that we had three years ago as prefer.
