What is PitchBook’s new role in Southeast Asia and why does it matter?
You're facing joblessness and rising costs of living, disruption to your daily life. If you're in the Philippines, you may not get a steady electricity supply. Everything's gonna go up. The longer this goes on, the worse it's gonna get. It is scary if you were low wage, particularly. I think it's quite a scary time. What's beginning to come up among some of the DC investors, particularly in the UAE, now is once this war ends, the things that are of most concern for a lot of these VCs as well as how can we integrate defence and security into our mandates.
Welcome to Brave. Learn from Southeast Asia's best tech leaders. Build the future, learn from our past, and stay human in between. No BS on success. I'm Jeremy Al, venture capitalist, Sierra founder, Harvard MBA, science fiction nerd, and dad of two daughters. Yes, I'm back. I'm back.
Congratulations on your new gig.
Thank you, thank you. So I just joined a pitch book. Yeah. As their first editorial hire here in Asia. So actually their Asia editor. Basically we're a data intelligence platform for private markets. So I mean simply put, if Bloomberg has like the data intelligence platform for public markets, we do private markets. The Singapore APAC office is slightly over three years old. And now we've come to the stage where like having, you know, established a sales team and a product team, I'm starting to beef up my research team. me doing editorial and marketing, so really kind of ramping up our presence here.
Incredible. Christinho used to be the person going to Accra to find out everybody's news. And now we're gonna turbocharge you with pitch book. You are going to be insane. You're gonna be like the sick reader.
And now I'm like, wow, you guys are really underutilizing your
You should be like updating this thing.
Wait, you you know, I mean you're like Mystery Asia, you couldn't afford a pitch book. No,
I guess it's really expensive. And I I know you I mean a lot of people complain about like how expensive
So
do you have do you have like a free Pishbook subscription from the I
don't run this company, I'm just the editorial person. So yeah, I just write stories and they see how you wanna take a subscription, you talk to my sales guy.
Oh I gotta buy this subscription. Oh
Yeah. So that's
Okay, all right, all right, that's okay. I'll use alternatives, uh dot P E. Oh bucket Jason Adwards.
Well yeah. It's a cheaper version. Yeah, true, true, true.
So, you know, there you are, you know, your pitch broke and obviously a lot of things have happened since our last podcast. I think one big news obviously is the entire Middle East crisis. You were based there for quite some time.
Yeah, about one and a half years. I mean really kind of went by. I think the last time I came on your podcast were I was still in Dubai.
Yeah, exactly. And none of this news was no prediction. Nobody was thinking this was happened. So let me quickly recap what has happened. But I think we're thinking more about the future and what's implications. The US, Israel and Iran have come to blows, right? Currently there's a ceasefire while negotiations are happening. But in effect there's a blockade of the Straits of Humuz where neither Iranian oil or G C C oil is coming out through tanker via the Strays of Homeless and Philippines has declared a national fuel emergency. The first one to declare in the world. And rightfully so, I would say. I think those prescient of them, I would say, courageous of them. But it's not to say like Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand.
How is the Middle‑East conflict reshaping global macro‑economics and energy markets?
All of us need energy.
With the exception of Malaysia, I think they are a net oil exporter.
And Brunei.
And
Sabarasa Warwaka, okay, fine. The rest of
us are.
We need air conditioning and You know, and oil and energy and gas to even do, you know, stir fry our dishes and stuff like that.
