I was a history major doing investment banking. I didn't know how to use Excel. I had no clue about multiples. I didn't know how to re-budget in financials. I didn't know anything. It was very scary because I had no idea what the future would hold. And I had no idea if it was gonna work out. And I had so many people relying on me. But it's kind of like VC, right? You know, you kind of take a bet, right? You take a bet on on something. And in this case, I took a bet on myself and I took a bet that, yeah, I can do it. You know, I I remember talking to my Mentor, and he was like, dude, if like the only way you're gonna grow is if you get out of your comfort zone and do this thing where you jump into jump into this pool ice closed, right?

Uh, you know, you're a general partner for uh Kickstarter Ventures, which is, you know, investing so much in the Philippines and Southeast Asia ecosystem.
Mike, could you introduce yourself?
Hey Jeremy. Um yeah, very happy to be here. Uh thanks for having me. Uh my name's Mike Mate. I'm one of the uh general partners at Kickstart Ventures. Uh Kickstart, we are a corporate venture capital firm. We're backed by Ayala, the Ayala Group, which is the oldest conglomerate in the Philippines, uh, and Gold Telecom, which is the leading telco in the Philippines. Uh and our mandate is really to find technologies in the Philippines and Southeast Asia and really across the world uh and bring them back to the Philippines and Southeast Asia and help those technologies scale with the help of our LPs. Uh and at the same time, you know, bring this kind of innovation to to the forefront of our LP's consciousness.
And I think obviously you have such a career as a lawyer and as uh in kind of investor. But I wanna go back all the way to, you know, Duke University days, right? Um, you know, back then you were uh doing political science and history. So what were you thinking back then? What what did you think your career was?
I'm gonna date myself a little bit. So I did I did my undergrad at Duke, like you said, and that was during the dot com bubble or just the dot com boom, but right it was the dot com boom at that time. And I remember I was going to school and I had started classes and I was all ready to do, you know, finance work. I was in economics doing all of that. And then one day I walked into this history class, this uh is medieval history, and I said, Wow, this is like the most amazing the most amazing class I've ever been in. Like I really loved the topic. I really like fell in love with like history. And I shut down all my economics. I shut down all my finance and I like just be I became a history major. So I did history major.
I did political science as well. And then I guess when I was graduating, even though it is the time, you know, 20 years ago it was like well actually you you don't know about that. Anyway, 20 years ago it was like, okay, what are you gonna do with your what are you gonna do with your degree? Right. And so I sat there, I was a scene I was like, oh man What do I get to do with my degree? I guess I'll just go to law school, right? So law school was probably the the the next thing with a history degree. My daughter was just born at the time. So I came home to the Philippines and I did law school here in Ateneo Law School. And also because you can't practice law in the Philippines if you don't graduate from a Philippine law school, right?
So I went home, uh did law, but you know, the the economics, the financing was always like percolating in my head.
