Uh I've interviewed Juan before on the podcast, though it's been we were just talking about this three and a half, almost four years ago since that interview.
If you didn't hear that uh that interview, then I'm obviously gonna let uh Juan Pablo sort of introduce himself here and uh and then we'll jump right in to talk about a new book that he has written. So Juan Pablo Take a few minutes and and tell us who you are.
Yeah, so my name is Juan Pablo Quiñones and I'm an author, homesteader, and adventurer. And I was born in Mexico, but I live in Canada. I'm a Canadian citizen too. And last time I was on the show, it was shortly after I had one um Alone, the History Channels Reality Survival Show.
I have to interrupt there because I know you're gonna say that and then you're just gonna breeze past it, but you won alone, season nine. Like this is a major competition show I watched that season. It was incredible. I I cannot, I have so much respect for you and what you had to go through in that process and just unbelievable fortitude. Um anyway, just really cool skill set. And so for the listeners, if you have not watched Alone, it's on History Channel. Channel, uh, watch season nine, and you can just watch Juan Pablo kick some butt there. It was amazing. Sorry for the spoilers. Yeah, well, yeah. It's been it's been five or six years now. Yeah. So if they haven't seen it, they deserve to be spoiled, right?
What inspired Juan Pablo to write *Collapse: Navigating Civilization’s Predicaments*?
Yeah, let's let's talk about your book. So um you reached out to me after that episode, and you actually told me when we recorded that, I believe, that you had intended to write this book. So I know it's been years in the making. You've spent a lot of Tell us first, I guess, what was your inspiration for for writing the book?
Yeah, so uh the whole topic about modern crisis has been on my mind for many years. Um especially like whenever I go into the forest for a long time and like I see the contrast between like just doing everything by hand and and going to civilization and all the things we take for granted. All these experiences really make me ponder a lot about all these issues. So for years I've been researching and just reading and and thinking about all these topics. And then I got to a point where I I'm like, I would like to organize these things for myself. And I think that other people would also appreciate it. And yeah, so basically I just took like a a year to write down all my ideas and start like with an outline and all that.
from there and I actually my intention was to then get a publisher to to publish it. But I actually it's funny because this the year where I was writing it, there's so many books coming out with the same topic. So many of the publishers in fact one of the publishers that I wanted to get, they came up with a with two books, like within one or two years. The title is very similar and I didn't know at the time when I was pitching in my idea. So it's just interesting. Mm. Like there's a lot like this topic right now is it's there.
Yeah, there's an increase in interest and in people talking about it and and putting the word out about it. The title of your book is Collapse Navigating Civilization's Predicaments with Wisdom and Courage. What is different about your book than maybe some of these other ones that you've mentioned on on similar topics?
Just the first thing that came to my mind is um many of these of the people doing like writing about these topics are white European descent or North Americans.
