Chapter 1: What unusual weather is Ireland experiencing right now?
Now, there's a headline in the sun today. Costa del Donegal is as hot as Spain. And we do love, don't we? We get obsessed with, is it hotter here than the Canaries and hotter than here and there? So it does look like yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far. Will today beat it? BBC weather presenter, Bara Best. Good morning. Hello there. Good morning, Brendan.
Bara, how did yesterday's temperatures compare with the average for this time of year in Ireland?
Yeah, I mean, I think the headline there sums it up pretty nicely. The Costa del Donegal. Lovely photographs coming in of Carrickfin Beach at Donegal Airport where we hit 22 degrees. That temperature is probably in and around nine degrees above average for the time of year. Many other places around the country, I have to say, weren't too far behind.
There was a lot of 20s and the odd 21 degrees as well. But it was Donegal that stole the limelight yesterday. We're not likely to hit that today, I'm afraid. We have a little bit more cloud around and we also have a few spots of rain in and around the Midlands. That should fizzle away.
Chapter 2: How do current temperatures compare to historical averages in Ireland?
But we're still looking today at temperatures well above average for the time of year by about six, maybe seven Celsius.
OK, so this is abnormal. So, of course, we'll get used to it very quickly now and expect it, but we probably shouldn't get used to it. How is the rest of the week going to unfold and next week?
Yeah, you're absolutely right. It is fairly abnormal. It's not too unusual to get blips like this. We do get periods of warmer than normal weather in the spring and in the summer, the same way as we get kind of cold spells that are colder than normal in the winter months. But we get to enjoy it at least after what was a very dismal start to the year.
And the good news is it's set to last into tomorrow and for much of next week. There is a little bit of bad news, I'm afraid, for you, Brendan.
Yeah.
It always comes, it seems, in time before the bank holiday weekend. It does look as though the weather is going to begin to break, probably in towards the end of Thursday, certainly into Friday. The latest charts we have indicate some showers and potentially heavy thundery showers breaking the fine spell of weather.
I presume there's a certain level of uncertainty, Barry, in that kind of long term forecast. That could change, could it?
Yes, the good news is it could change. But, you know, we have a fairly good idea of what's going to come up in the next few days, you know, two or three days out. It's fairly certain we can kind of go with that.
We can keep refreshing the forecast for next weekend. And Camille, would you be prepared to make any kind of, obviously everyone's thinking, you know, are we going to have a great summer? Are we going to have a great May? Is there any tea leaves you can read on that?
