Fashion stylist and personal shopper Cathy O'Connor, hello.
Cathy O'Connor 0:03
How are you?
Brendan O'Connor 0:04
I'm great, thanks. Cathy, we're going to talk a bit today about packing for holidays. But in order to talk about packing for holidays, we need to talk first about dressing on holidays. And dressing in hot weather for Irish people can be very liberating. Which can be both a good thing or a bad thing. What would be the golden rules?

What are the golden rules for dressing on holidays?

Cathy O'Connor 0:22
So I think it's about weight of fabric, Brendan. The kind of fabric that we can wear here is perfect for an Irish summer. When you get to somewhere that's tipping 30 degrees and over that, those cottons that you're wearing suddenly feel like lagging jackets. So it's about the type of fabric that you're wearing will really revolutionise what you're packing. But I think... You know, packing comes, in fact, in not one, not two, but three phases.
Brendan O'Connor 0:49
OK, go on. Give me the three phases.
Cathy O'Connor 0:51
So the first one is that you've got to keep it real. You have been on holidays before. This is probably not your first venture. So you know yourself. You know the kind of holidays that you like to have. And I can absolutely guarantee that there are things that you love to wear on holidays. You pack lots more, but you keep on reverting to your favourites. And I think it's really good to just reflect on that. where where am i going what's the temperature going to be like what's the environments like what kind of holiday am i going to have so if i want to be poolside a lot of the time and maybe i'll go for a nice lunch or maybe it's all about nightclubs and my wardrobe really needs to reflect that or indeed perhaps you're going on a city break and you want to walk around a lot these are the
Cathy O'Connor 1:35
So think it through. Yeah, yeah. And have a plan.
Brendan O'Connor 1:38
Exactly, and break it down in terms of... Now, going back to... That's an interesting thing you say about that. You know the stuff you'll end up wearing all the time and you put in a load of other stuff then. Absolutely. You know, a lot of people, what they'll do is they'll pack and then... Go back again and take out half of it. Never mind Coco Chanel and take off one thing. We really do bring too much generally, don't we?
Cathy O'Connor 2:01
Absolutely.
Brendan O'Connor 2:01
And you revert to the same favourites.
Cathy O'Connor 2:03
Yeah, and it can be incredibly frustrating because not only do you have the stress of how much weight do I have in my suitcase and am I going to get stopped and the irritation of being charged extra... But then when you get there, you've got a load of stuff that you're not actually wearing. So I think it's really good to break down your holiday. If you've got seven days, six nights, what am I going to be doing and packing for things for that? I'm a huge fan of the slow pack. Do not be tempted at the very last minute to imagine that you know where that summer top is or your goggles or whatever it is. I think it's really good to give yourself a bit of time, slowly start to gather things, lay them out on the bed.

What are the three phases of packing for a holiday?

Cathy O'Connor 2:43
And then what you are doing is you are creating outfits. You are not packing clothes. You are creating outfits every step of the way.
Brendan O'Connor 2:51
OK, and I presume we are doing that with what you might call a capsule wardrobe, are we? With having pieces that you can put together in different ways.
Cathy O'Connor 2:58
Exactly. And Brendan, I think one of the easiest ways to do that is to choose a colour palette. So choose a colour palette of two colours and then you can add in print or a pattern of any sort. But before you pack anything, you have to ask yourself, when am I going to wear it and what am I going to wear it with? And so you cannot be, I'll take this just in case I get invited on safari. It's not going to happen, lads. It didn't happen last time. You didn't get invited to the ball. So it's really good to think through why it is that you're packing things. And if you choose a colour palette, it means that everything is going to mix and match with what you have in your suitcase. So you look really stylish, feel really good, and you've only packed the minimum amount.
Brendan O'Connor 3:41
OK, now, when you say colour palette, a lot of... women and men as well, their comfort zone is black and navy.
